I am a long time user of linux for servers but am looking to give it another go for pc desktop. Tried many years ago but a few of my non negotiable software preferences were unavailable so it was a no go. It seems linux is much more widely supported these days so I'd like to revisit the possibility. I'd like to make sure I am doing this right and not missing anything.

I have a brand new Win 11 system arriving tomorrow that comes with a single 1TB SSD. I just ordered two additional SSDs and plan to use one of them for my linux installation (and I understand I want to disconnect the windows drive while performing the install to prevent an issue with grub), and the other as a shared file drive between the two systems. I am thinking NTFS for the shared drive.

I would like the Windows drive to contain only program and game files, and likewise for the linux drive. Then the shared drive would contain all my documents, music, videos, photos and random junk to be accessible between the two. Is this a sound gameplan?

One of my most frequently played gamed only lists Ubuntu for linux, so it appears that will be my base, but beyond that I have no idea what to go with regarding distro and desktop environment. My previous foray into desktops was many years ago and very brief. The bulk of my experience is with red hat based linux with no graphical interface. What might be good options for this setup? I am looking for a minimal installation that I can manually add only what I need with clean UI that closely mimics either win or mac (so I don't have a huge learning curve with navigation).

ntfs is a poor choice for shared home directory. For one, Linux specific file attributes won't work on ntfs.

This cannot be right, chkdsk runs on a partition, not a disk, and does not concern itself with anything outside of the designated partition. You're going to have to bring evidence of people reporting this or stop spreading misinformation.
