For starters, ifconfig is obsolete and as of today, broken in some aspects. ip a gets you the same basic information ifconfig does, but, your MAC address is listed by the link/ether label.

If I go to Network Status, and click on Wifi, I get a MAC Address at the bottom of the settings that shows the screenshot above and it gives me a MAC Address, Is that completely different from the MAC Address I get when I use ubuntu with ip a or ifconfig?

What's the difference in this?

A MAC (Media Access Control) address, sometimes referred to as a hardware or physical address, is a unique, 12-character alphanumeric attribute that is used to identify individual electronic devices on a network.

Why would the MAC Address be different here?

I'm not sure if it does, I'm horribly technologically inept

#

I'm trying to figure out why the ether mac address in my ubuntu after using ifconfig/ ip a is different from what I said above

#

cuz they are totally different

#

Wait, do MAC Addresses change all the time? If I join a ssh, the ifconfig/ip a shows me a different MAC Address now

Unfortunately

#

Yes, what?

solid ridge
#

unfortunately I don't have my own linux machine or whatever the terminology is, so I had to do this instead

I see. I don't provide help for WSL stuff. I haven't really touched nor cared about windows since NT 4.0.

Anytime you ask a question using that, you need to be clear to mention it's under WSL, because that massively changed everything. Especially if it's WSL or WSL2.

#

I'm going to assume that the difference in MAC Address is because i was using windows, and the ubuntu thing is a completely different address separate

Likely, virtualization, yes.

#

But, WSL or WSL2?

#

Huge difference, again.

solid ridge
#

I am assuming it's WSL based off of the link I sent above saying it's Install WSL

#

Hmmm

#

Maybe not

#

I might have WSL 2 then

Original Questions for anyone who comes into this chat:

  1. To find my MAC Address, I need to use ifconfig, but what exactly is the MAC Address amongst that absolute ridiculous pile of text??? Is it the "Ether?" section? (This may be solved now due to realization of using WSL (2))

  2. To find the IP Address of a site, I need to use ping and then the name of the site. It shows the IP Address of the site immediately after the name of the site I pinged right? (This is a super dumb question, but just want to make sure). This IP Address is also able to change, right?

  3. What does it mean "What type of records do you get" when describing doing a DNS lookup of a website????

Extra Context Below

Not sure whether this is WSL 1 or WSL 2

They can see that on the original post....

Command Prompt tells me WSL Version 2

#

Another question to be had, with regards to Command Prompt, I noticed that when I use getmac, I am able to see 2 different physical addresses.

#

The first one seems to be my Windows one, but the 2nd one appears to be AWFULLY similar to the one on my Ubuntu WSL 2

#

It's not the exact same, but it's eerily close, the first 3 segments are identical, but the last 3 segments are different. What is the meaning behind this? Is it the same one being targeted?

fresh verge
#

WSL2 is basically Microsoft Hyper-V based virtualization, so yes, you're getting new vMAC's, for any vNIC you have. With only guessing "getmac" is not a Linux command, but a Windows one, I have no other input to provide.

#

And what's the point of this question at all? Where are you going with this?

solid ridge
#

I've only recently installed this WSL program and am trying to figure out what this all even means

fresh verge
#

So, these are.. homework questions?

solid ridge
#

Well no, I'm not asking for answers, I'm questioning the results I've received

fresh verge
#

nods, walks away.

solid ridge
#

Like, I still don't understand why there are several different MAC Addresses aside from the first one being the windows machine, although you said that I am getting this thing called new vMAC's for any vNIC I have
I actually have no idea what vMAC or vNIC means as a complete novice to all this terminology, but I do wonder why there is a difference in MAC Address for my 2nd one in Command Prompt compared to the Ubuntu ifconfig/ip a result, specifically in the latter half

I don't think it ultimately matters but it'd be nice to know what this even means if anyone knows what I am talking about at all here.
