#Game would benefit from OSRS writing

I may be biased, but I was curious what others thought of current RS3 dialogue. One of the things I enjoyed about OSRS was that the PC was sarcastic, reluctant, or otherwise different from a typical protagonist. They went along with quests because the end result was the goal, but were snarky along the way.

I have 250 quests finished in OSRS, I quit RS3 after EOC like everyone else so I was going through the years doing quests. I am not sure what current year quest dialogue is like, but some that stood out to me are the ones giving you multiple dialogue options. Two don't progress the quest, one does. It is usually fairly obvious like in Doric and Boric which is the correct answer, which one sets you back, and another is nonsensical.

This leaves RS3 quests feeling generic and for the most part press spacebar quests. OSRS I listened intently when I was learning about Zaros and lore about them. Biggest offender is the Violet seasonal made permanent quest. My immersion was broken upon seeing a random snow zone portal, and my character yelling out the equivalent of "OMG A YETI YOU EAT CHILDREN" and that was how I progressed the quest.

I wouldn't say it would be a priority to go back and change all the quests, or do that at all. But it might be better for the future for both games to learn what one does that people like and take from it. Also wanted to make this post to see if RS3 players feel similar to me who mainly played OSRS for a couple years.

Modern RS has a more “main character” narrative with their big quests, which is often more serious than OS. It’s actually one of the things people enjoy the most about modern quests; they introduce some great lore! However I think we all love the silly humor in the small stuff and well placed irony in the big stuff. I ultimately disagree with you, but there’s definitely criticisms to be had with a lot of their dialogue.

My biggest example of writing I didn’t enjoy (but thankfully hasn’t really been any issue lately) is in Death to Chivalry when they give you dialogue options that are polarizing and different, but you get railroaded into an outcome anyways. Why give me the option to tell Saradomin no with the wand if it just results in us doing it anyways?

Multiple choice is great when it either offers permanent change, or is only fluff for the sake of personality. But apart from these sort of complaints I have, I think a lot of modern writing is pretty enjoyable

The older runescape quests feel like your character is more chaotic, and I do actually appreciate that. For example, I think that the modern writing would have made "The Tourist Trap" less enjoyable

I think its OK for our character to have a tinge of chaotic good, and for the modern quests I have done, it seem like some of that has been lost

I was surprised doing quests in leagues by how unlikeable the player character is in a lot of older ones, if anything I'd rather they be brought up to modern writing standards

I disagree. I prefer RS storytelling exactly as I feel both our character and NPC characters are more of actual characters in story. I feel in OSRS, our character will always be this "carefree adventurer" no matter how serious the story may get. In RS, I feel there's more "weight" in quests. When things get serious, I feel they really get serious even for our own character.

I did "Extinction" recently and I can say that for a quest like that, I so appreciated the seriousness of it, the lack of some (for me) cringe humor from older RS because there was no place for it there... the entire universe was at stake, we went through more than one betrayal in that quest and there was such big responsibility on us. So while I don't mind comedic quests, I do think it's good for RS to generally have more modern writing standards and not rely on some humor for sake of humor because it used to be like that. In fact, I like that there's distinction between RS and OSRS's handling of quests.

Modern OSRS quest writing isn't anything like the game was actually written in 2007 to begin with. They also went back and edited a bunch of pre-archive content to be closer to their "Modern" style.

Modern RS3 stuff is much closer to how things actually were back then.

#

Plus all the old quests are as they actually were back then!

#

Also you're using two novice quests made years ago by people who aren't with the company anymore as your examples.

That's why I made this thread. I didn't have many people to talk to about the quests and got vague answers. Good to know it gets better later.

#

Also it figures the quests I'm questionable on are all things people have left made lol

#

I am working my way from the bottom of the "optimal" quest guide up since that was my direction on OSRS. Seeing the same quests in both games having the same dialogue made me wonder if it gets better later. Unfortunately lot of those quests to use as why is this game like this are at the bottom. I don't know if I would say new player experience since I doubt someone playing a.game for the first time would look for these quests via a guide, but wew it was whiplash

#

Would be nice if the permanent seasonal quests were moved into an optional area so they don't count for the quest cape if someone doesn't want to do them

"optimal" is probably going to be a bad way of experiencing quests if your main priority is the narrative

#

Optimal is what I chose since I came back to 10+ years of content and didn't know where to start.

#

Is there a way to view the quests in narrative order then?

You might want to consider going through them by release year. I do think that our character has matured by the time we get to the more modern quests, which leads to a different type of dialogue

timeline or release date are going to be a better route through for following the story

Ah thanks

Thanks for the help even if this was meant to be a suggestion thread. This helps a lot

Would be ironic if we get the option to chop red mahogany when woodcutting is increased to 120. XD

zinc reef
#

Unless.... What if you could get your woodcutting to 120 and skip the whole quest? That'd be incredible, lol

(Skipping the quest by having 120 WC)

Yanni: "Well, that's absolutely wonderful my friend! Many thanks!"

Player: "Wait, that's it? i had to level up woodcutting to the max to get your red wood!"
