#remove muting from game
142 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Removing muting would open up a whole lot of problems tbh, Racial/Slurs/Hatespeech, while the game has a recommended age, its still a family game, i feel removing a threat of foul language would lead to a very unhealthy/friendly place in the game
I feel like you're missing the point of mutes. Just because it's rated 16+ doesn't give you a free pass to be racist / homophobic / etc. There has to be a level of moderation to make people feel safe & comfortable.
i have strong feelings about this because i have tried to understand not just this game but also a lot of western society over the past 2 decades, but i see where not having muting could allow the game to get kind of crazy. theres still the element of paying for a service that gets terminated early in part without refund, the 16+ warning, and there is no way to stop hate speech in any society. i believe people are too codled and narcassistic thinking they should have a perfect room with no alternative views in this world and it seriously distresses me.
if you said, or did, anything to warrant being muted. then they would see it, look at the conduct used with, and apply the punishment.
in your case, if you were muted, let alone perm, there was a reason for it, and it was applied as such.
the fact you are paying for a service is also a reason why jagex have a duty of care towards the users of said service, paid or not. it needs moderation and a deterant, otherwise it would be a complete mess
and before it's said: "Freedom of speech" isn't "freedom of consequences", and doesn't apply in these cases anyways.
there is no way to stop hate speech in any society
That doesn't mean we shouldn't try our best to prevent it from it happening to other human beings
i believe people are too codled and narcassistic thinking they should have a perfect room with no alternative views in this world
hate speech / slurs / bigotry / etc. are not alternative views - they're purely hatred and are unacceptable for our community
the "victims" dont see a result because they have a very small likelyhood of crossing each others path in the game again, whereas the muted character's owner might start having serious mental issues such as depression, suicidial ideation, anxiety, and more
because you can't spew toxicity and other things which got themselves revoked access to freetype?
at that point, professional help, not a game company's freetype chat, is the solution
i would like to remain anonymous about my personal runescape account, but i do like to have philisophical and political conversations in the game and i dont see how that is offensive
if it warranted a mute, and a mute was applied, let alone perm. it was no "conversation" to be had in-game.
nothing more, nothing less.
nothing to excuse it, either.
but being muted for my political beliefs is exactly what jagex is tryin to protect these other "victims" by doing?
it's no longer about the beliefs, or "censorship" as much as what was said was not suited for any audience.
and victimizing yourself over your own actions isn't the way to deal with it.
you said something you weren't meant to, were perm muted, and nothing more can be done.
weither it was severe right from the get-go, or over time warned by temps, doesn't matter.
it feels like this has become more about me and less about the hypothetical of why mute to begin with and how muting actually affects the community, which was my intention.
There is no excuse for hatred or anger, and if you feel that way, YOU should be stepping away from the game, not bring other people who are just trying to enjoy the game down. Mutes are there to at least try and bring some control to situations, this game to alot of players is an escape from reality, something to pass the time, something they find fun and enjoyable, and allowing anyone to say anything they desire regardless of how horrible/vile it may be, will cause nothing but the feelings you have described the "mutee" from getting, it is safer and better for the game to keep mutes in place to prevent that, than worry about the ones the strive to spread hate.
Side note if you are feeling any of them things, there is options you can reach out to for help, instead of taking it out on players
Jagex takes mental health issues very seriously and you can be sure that any such reports will be flagged up for internal review with a high priority.
And lets be realistic here. In game mutes aren't going away any time soon. You can feel however you want, its not going to change anything.
heres a question - does being muted for something that happend on a USA server fall under USA court jurisdiction?
it's generally considered fully international, as it's public. it's not a courthouse, or government building.
You can look up court cases from the past I assume
thus ^
Only a solicitor could really answer that accurately
Jagex have the right to remove any speech they like in the game
this is like brazil trying to go after elon musk cause he wouldnt censor posts
But what you say in-game could probably be used in legal proceedings - that's where a legal expert would need to clarify though
yeah i know apparently jagex used to take the time to file reports to local law enforcement for certain things
I feel not enough players are muted but that could be because I don't notice the ones that are
For what it's worth, you shouldn't be getting muted for having civilised conversations in-game. If what you say breaks the rules then you may possibly end up with a mute
the ones muted use quick chat. i ran into a lot of people like this training div
quickchat is usable by people not muted as well
But then realistically the problem you would have is with the rules, and their enforcement, rather than the mute itself
and there is no way to stop hate speech in any society
most people doing hate speech IRL get muted really fast; it's just slower to control on the Internet
the people at div quick chatting aren't actually muted they're just pretending; trust me
but there are also a lot of people at w79 incand wisps spamming or autotyping for attention (probably also botting energy cuz they've been at 200m XP for MONTHS)
hopefully a player moderator starts training div soon
every now and then you see them say something not through qc
from a financial perspective (jagex IS a business), mutes would encourage people to buy less membership, keys, and bonds, in my opinion
I like that spam bots can be muted
If a mute would put someone off of playing, they probably weren't serious about playing in the first place
First to give me 10m wont regret it
On the flip side, would an extremely toxic, unmoderated environment not put off even more people from playing, therefore even less revenue?
Mutes have been in the game since the start and its been going on for 20+ years, i really don't think it effects business
bet
this is also a good point
First to give me 10m wont regret it
First to give me 10m wont regret it
First to give me 10m wont regret it
please stop
Its also the other way around. Others are upset if the game chat is toxic and it wont be dealt with
okay, what if instead of removing muting we just put the age warning to 13+ instead of 16+ because people need emotional protection from guards?
then why don't we just remove all in game chat so its no longer a point of discussion
you do know, platforms which are 18+ still remove comments and content that are still 18+ for not conforming to their rules, and being outright toxic right?
that label doesn't do much, when the user is just trying to justify their behaviours.
theres people online right now that literally try to bait people so they can report them because they think it will make them a player moderator
removing muting isn't a solution, nor trying to tiptoe around the behaviours, as much as the users should be restricted and being showcased it's not alright.
and if they can't behave, they're punished.
People won't be muted for the sake of emotional protection of others, unless what you say is genuinely awful then I can't see any real reason why a mute would be issued, either by a P-Mod or by Jagex Staff
okay well tell me this. they give you an "appeal" but then when you click to choose the evidence they have against you they say they cant show you it. how does this help someone appeal? at least fix this, jagex.
you have a perm mute, but, it shows as appealable?
I don't really know enough about the appeals and evidence bit as that's not my area of expertise, though someone else can probably answer that for you
eh most people don't really want that because it limits what you could say
haven't really seen people baiting, but most people aren't reporting enough (on all platforms)
Anyway, going back to your original question though, the purpose of the mute tool is multifaceted. It's not just used for a singular purpose. Both Jagex staff and P-Mods will issue a mute based on what their set of guidelines tells them to do. Much like here we won't take action against somebody for doing something that falls outside of our guidelines
So if you receive a mute for something that falls within those guidelines, then that's because that's something that Jagex as a company does not want to see in the game, which if that's the case then your issue would be with disagreeing on what Jagex want and do not want in the game, not the tool that is used
These days, it takes something crazy to even be muted. Whatever it is, at least it was mute in a game. Doing crazy behavior to random strangers in real life would just lead to job losses, arrest, physical assault, or worse. Even though it's 16+, people who use adult language are only doing it to friends or to vent frustration. It's never right anywhere to use speech to harm people you don't know.
There's like weird things I've seen ingame like people threatening each other about IRL stuff found on their social medias over AoD drama and honestly this is a game that should not ever be taken too seriously.
I got muted for an hour for being annoying
I think everyone in this thread is glad that happened
As the one muted. Sometimes it takes being forced to STFU for a player to take a minute and reflect on their actions. Not being able to be part of the discussion because what I say is disruptive or disrespectful to the overall Chat is for the greater good of the community.
You can piss in your bathtub but keep it out of the public pool dude.
based way to prove a point
i think mute option is in place to stop people from saying things that disturb most people.
What those disturbing things are i cant say, but i do agree some people find certain things disturbing that should not be found disturbing. or are not disturbing to others.
And of course, people have their reasons for saying these things, whether it be from personally liking those things and wanting to talk about them, to anger, to anger with reasons, etc
Muting them wont solve the reason why they are saying those things, whatever those things are and whatever the reason is
But idk if thats really Jagex's goal, to be a person that solves peoples IRL problems
fwiw: while venting can be a coping mechanism for some, there's proper ways to go about it, and in a public forum and chat server isn't really it.
if it gets to the point they say stuff which could get them perm muted, or muted multiple times without catching the hint; they'd be better off seeking more professional help than rely on a game companies playerbase as fodder.
some stuff can be a bit silly on paper depending how you grew up (eg extremely racist demographic locations don't see an issue sometimes) but it doesn't exactly make it right either.
and even if a friend group may be okay with the chat spoken, or do so themselves, it doesn't really accept that it was said as okay overall.
so Jagex stays consistent and mutes depending on the actions the account did, even if you think it may be contextually okay, functionally and socially it would not have been.
also depends on how the society interprets and receives it (negatively or positively). some things might be a negative, banned thing in some places and some time periods, whereas in other time periods and places, those things are practiced freely and everyone is happy doing them.
(not talking about hate speech. just talking in general about actions)
Hatred and anger sometimes DO have reasons. For example, if someone severely inconvenienced you, and caused great sufferings to you, then there would be anger.
idk what u mean by "there is no excuse" when there are reasons behind it, sometimes, reasons that make sense
Though i do agree that it should not be said in a game, and should go to local IRL authorities.
For example, if u notice someone littering, then instead of venting it out in-game, you should take a picture (if you can without getting noticed) and send it to law enforcement or municiaplity or something
A reason is not an excuse.
Reasons explain actions, but they don't remove blame. You're still responsible for your actions.
Easiest way to combat that, is if someone is annoying you, just mute them yourself and move on. Getting angry at them is probably what they want, so you're just playing into their hands by getting mad.
They're trying to annoy you to get a reaction out of you, so they can feel good about themselves and get a giggle out of it.
By not giving them what they want, as in, just shrugging it off, muting/blocking/ignore-listing them, and saying to yourself in your head 'lol what a loser', you are the one walking away from that situation as the winner :)
I say this from experience having played one of the most toxic games in the planet for neigh on a decade...
If someone else's action directly caused you to do something, doesnt it mean that they are also to blame for influencing you to do that action?
Usually, no. You choose your own actions.
I know I've said and done things I'm not proud of in response to people, and that's on me, not them.
They are responsible for their actions, I'm responsible for mine.
hmm...sorry, but i disagree. i believe ppl can heavily, heavily influence you to do actions you would otherwise not do.
influence is not a force, it can drive you to act, but you are still responsible for how you act.
thus why people ragebait, as they know you'd be the demographic to react, and not control your behaviours
Put it this way, say I'm doing Slayer and some guy comes to crash me, or troll me or w/e.
Rather than get angry at them and flame them, or swear at them. I just giggle a little to myself, and move to another world, there's no point getting angry, because that's what they're looking for, they're trying to make you mad. So by denying them the privilege of a reaction, you're walking away as the winner in that situation
Because by not reacting, you've just made them waste their own time :)
Sudo essentially said my reply.
This ^
Yes, you are still responsible, but the rage-baiter is also responsible for influencing you to do that action. thats what i think
Responsibility vs why
influence would be closer to peer pressure, force would me more of a weapon to your body "act or die"; the former is your choice how you act, the latter is not.
nobody is putting a weapon to your irl body and telling you to call that dude a slur for simply being a nuisance.
why doesn't matter, as they act upon what was done
anyone, anywhere, can try to find a reason why for their madness, the reason doesn't excuse it
They are responsible for their own actions - that doesn't remove any responsibility from you for your own actions.
I agree, both are responsible
the latter of weapon is still a choice to act. u can choose to act. or u can choose to not act
but that would be the difference from influence and force.
Actions have concequences, it really doesn't matter what the why is, outcome is the same, if you commit a crime, and use the excuse "Well he told me to do it/He wound me up so i retaliated" you will still face the same punishment, The topic at hand is about "Removing muting from the game", you do the crime (Slur/Hate speech/etc etc), you get muted as a punishment, it really is irrevelant as to why you said/did what you said to get a mute
Yeah, muting should be kept. Isnt really Jagex's place to try and solve IRL problems. Though i think trolling and griefing other players should also be punished to prevent players from causing suffering to other players.
That i do agree with.
I do notice that there are some players that are disturbed by things that a large amount of players love talking about, so maybe there can be a seperate server for either one of those type of players?
Not going to say what that topic is. Just a general idea.
Wild that this guy never said what exactly he got muted for lul.
Mutes are also appealable. If you have an issue with your mute then you are more than welcome to write a compelling argument for your behaviour 🤷🏻♂️
@mellow maple
Some people get triggered by rainbows in game. During Jagex’s pride month are they influencing me and forcing me to start LGBTQ+ bashing? Or is that something that I should avoid doing by ignoring it?
A player is responsible for their own conduct. Trolls exist everywhere and not feeding them (by your reaction) is probably Rule #3
Players might be responsible for their own conduct, but i think that people who influenced those players into doing "bad" conduct should also be dealt with.
Some people can not control their reactions
I can not think of a specific scenario atm, but im sure there are some scenarios and cases where player B's bad conduct happened because of player A motivating them to do it or something
then player B is responsible for their actions, and A can be reported by B instead of reacting.
player A's actions don't grant player B immunity from accountability.
a lack of self control is not an excuse for acting regardless of influence.
especially if it ends up being something mutable, they would generally know better. and if they don't, that mute acts as a reminder, and if that reminder fails to get through, and they continue, then they lose the right
there's realistically no way to toetoe around it to make it okay, as the rest is just putting your actions into a blame upon others, and ignoring accountability to their actions.
Yeah, doesnt change the fact that the person that did the bad conduct was Player B.
But i also think that many people do not have self-control, and are easily baited, and the blame would go on them instead of the person that baited them, effectively allowing baiters to get innocent people angry and perma-muted
The person that got baited would still be responsible and perma-muted, and the baiter would get away without getting harmed
Do i understand correctly, ur view?
If Jim tells Bob, "steal money from that person"
and Bob steals money, Bob should definitely still be punished for stealing money
Jim may or may not be punished, depending on their involvement with the crime
The best, easiest solution for Bob is to right-click Jim and click "Add ignore Jim"
I think thats just a way to get innocent people to do things that get them perma-muted, with the person that told them to do it never getting punished. From my point-of-view, all people who influence others to do bad conduct should be punished, with the person who did the bad conduct maybe getting punished, depending on the case
Many people do not do "add ignore Jim"
Its like punishing Bob for stealing money when Jim told them to. Its not Bob's fault, its Jim's. Many people, such as Bob, are not mentally powerful enough to ignore others or make their own decisions
What do u think?
"ideologically inclined", given the "if you know what i mean" bit, i assume dictatorship was the intended phrase not said but implied?
keep things civil, attacks on anyone are not acceptable
I feel this conversation is getting severly off topic tbh, its a suggestion to remove mutes from the game, nothing more
I think people who intentionally cause others to do "bad conduct" should be punished, with the person who was baited into doing the bad conduct maybe being punished? wasnt really their fault...
wait a minute'
thats not on-topic, what i said
LMAO
yeah dont remove mutes, that would result in people being irritating and saying things that cause great discomfort to many people, with them never being stopped
While its fully agreed that them who "bait" others into actions they maybe wouldnt of otherwise done get punished, as a player there is many ways to leave that situation, if you are being baited via private message, add them to ignore, turn private to friends only, If you are being batied ingame, add them to ignore, hop worlds, move location..
there are many ways you can deter yourself away from the situation, and diffuse it, but by staying and interacting with the "Baiter" you are just as bad as the baiter and should also receive punishment.. using "ive been influenced" is not a good excuse, and unfortuately the internet is.. well.. the internet, there is trolls at every turn, and if you don't feel you can control yourself and emotions when being trolled, then you need to take the actions to remove yourself from that situation, not feed into it
Yeah, now its just on the player to have the mental power to take themselves away from the situation, which some people might not have.
from my point of view, ideally there should be 0 baiters or "bad actors", since some people do not have the power to ignore someone, put someone on a ignore list, or take themselves away from a situation
they are not skilled enough or self-control enough to do so
If you have a suggestion on how that can be acheived, you should start a thread, because i feel thats something the internet has had to deal with since day one
