if you're not successfully completing it every time, you're doing something wrong, its definitely the best disturbance and doing it has no RNG involved

I think it could stand to be more forgiving when you miss the smoke tick, maybe just lose one progress per tick instead of completely resetting

Does the animation still not play the second time when it happens twice in a row?

It can be accomplished by clicking it each tic, even if you don't see / hear the pink. It takes a little longer to click, but it assures you will get rewarded.

There is a technique to it and that is to click the pool each and every time the progress bar fills.

I agree I've had many get almost to the end and reset a couple of times, by that time you may as well give up because you have no time. If you spam it more that twice, it doesn't work.

Yeah well, I do but it resets on me too many times and time runs out.

Literally it is as soon as you see the bar fill slightly you click the pool again. This way you will be in time to dismiss the smoke without doing it too soon or often where it delays the progress. You also need to remember to get on it as soon as it appears because it will disappear very quickly
