#Curb inflation by raising the ge tax

They already raised the GE tax from what was initially proposed
they also put out a news post saying that the tax slightly exceeded their expectations
Janet Yellen over here trying to ruin our economy even more
Citation needed methinks.
The numbers are off, but by the numbers Jagex did give us, we do have high inflation and the GE tax, while exceeding expectations, does not fight the inflation. It's doing barely more than death costs used to, and its whole goal was to offset the lowered death cost.
So yeah, we need more, better ways to remove gold.
But not necessarily this.
honestly what should be done to cut inflation is by stopping these crazy MTX events (i.e. golden phat, green santa, purple hween, etc...). This will drive bond prices beyond reasonable costs, which has a direct relationship in the overall inflation issues in game.
There needs to be more thought to what rewards should be given for new things besides GP.
You realize that bonds & rares don't add gold, right?
Yes, they can be inflated by events but only gold affects most items. Curbing gold or bleeding gold is the only useful solution.
I already boycott the ge for implementing tax. How can I boycott it further if this new tax is raised? 🤔
Do all of you like your gold becoming less valuable? Prices are already absurd, and they are just getting worse.
The ge is the root cause of inflation, does anyone else agree or have an opinion on what the actual root cause of inflation is? Someone also mentioned to me it may be that jagex started selling bonds? Idk.
The root cause of inflation is the fact that every time a monster drops gold, or you alch an item money is effectively being printed. Unless something removes this gold from circulation, the total amount of gold goes up. When the total amount of currency goes up, each unit is worth less, which is called inflation
Bonds are neutral in terms of amount of gold in circulation, possibly very slightly negative due to the cost to flip a bond removing some gold
It would also be possible to maintain purchasing power of gold by making rare drops less rare. This could be achieved by several methods such as increasing drop rate, making boss drops something you can sell on to a lower level player when you outgrow it, or making comparable gear from production skills actually worth using
There needs to be more things that you can spend GP on with NPCs that are worth doing. Exactly what, I'm not sure, shops have a bad habit of being good sources of items that gathering and crafting skills should be better sources off but aren't, but I'm not being paid to come up with ideas.
Should we also consider in game tax returns as well? I mean I'd like some of this back if I can prove I used it for means which could be considered potential tax write offs?
GP tax is there for entirely separate reasons than Real Life tax.
ge tax exists because everyone in the game world functionally has access to their own mint. we dont need a tax return because we arent building roads and underfunding public schools with taxes, we're balancing out every single player being a literal money printer.
The government (AKA Jagex) has no use for a single gp from any of us. What it's doing is ensuring that the wackadoo GP generation methods that over 2 decades of power creep have introduced doesn't snap the game over its knee.
Could making other in game currencies tradable on the ge work?
first off, that has absolutely nothing to do with gp generation. second, that's already a thing. chronotes. trading sticks.
Tax return forms would make an amusing April Fools event though.
no lie id love that
Yeah, that'd be great. Especially if they lean into it at least as hard as Witcher did.
I want to buy other things like magic beans or thalor, etc. I mean all currencies not just a few of them.
Ah. So buying achievements and bypassing gameplay with money. Never heard that suggestion before.
Yes, exactly. And I'm sure someone has said it before me so I won't take credit for being original.
It's not just unoriginal but also very much a bad idea. Why play any of the game when you can just do high alch instead?
Or when you can just boy bonds with $$$ and sell them for gold. Pay to not play?
If anything they should put a cap on the ge tax, so ppl have more incentive to sell and buy high end rares on GE.
in other words, just tax the poor 🤔 surely if we provide such tax breaks for the rich, that money will trickle down into the rest of the RS economy
Once they raise the cap for the money pouch and GE, there will be a big incentive for selling rares on the GE even with the tax: not having to deal with merchers. I think that for most high value items people will be willing to get hit with the tax because the convenience of the GE would be better than spending time haggling with merchers. Sure you might take a sizeable hit on rares but you wouldn't have to deal with merchers
Or spend hours actively looking, yeah.
Inflation continues to plague us. Something must be done, and I still feel a higher tax is the way to go. Gold has to leave either through a tax, or some other form of gold sink. If anyone has a better idea, I would love to hear it, but we needed solutions yesterday, and every day we wait the problem gets worse
Another suggestion you say? Easy. Have Divine charges require gold as well to make haha. A single charge of 3000 would require “X” amount of energy as well as “X” amount of gold. AND make charges untradeable that way EVERYONE has to spent time away from killing monsters which in return reduces the amount of gold entering the game
Update GE tax as well. Tax on both buying and selling. Tax brackets as well, 1-10% of based on item’s worth when buying and 1-5% when selling.
For example, Highest tax bracket 10% (5%) would apply if the market price of an item is valued at 500m so if you buy said item of 500m you have to pay 50m in taxes. If you sell said item of 500m you only receive 475m as you paid 25m in taxes.
Wanna get more scummy? At the start of every month EVERY SINGLE PLAYER has a “Tax to be collected” debuff where any gold that would be obtained by ANY means (monster drops, Alchemy, trading, GE etc) is essential eliminated until the tax is fulfilled. Tax brackets would also apply here. 1-10%.
Example, a players net worth based on the in game wealth evaluator is 10b. At the start of the month that player has a 10% “Tax to be collected” debuff which prevents them from getting gold until 100m would be collected. So for example, if said player would alch an item worth 50k (some salvage for example) the item would still be alched but the coins would not go to the money pouch but rather disappear from the game. To prevent loopholes, the GE buying (not selling) and direct trading would become unavailable until this debuff goes away.
I know this last suggestion is a bit extreme so maybe leave it as a last resort haha
Honestly, these are great. I am always in favor of items being untradable, and any way to purge gold is welcome
The tax debuff might be a bit extreme though
Even with the current tax rate, flagging items worth above say 200m as tradable via GE only would help
Jagex could implement an income tax per week. If you make X amount of income for that week, you would have to pay a certain amount of taxes. If there were 2 tiers, one for 9999999 with 5% tax rate and one at 10m at 10% tax rate, you would be taxed 5% on all earnings under 10m and 10% tax rate beyond this.
In addition, Jagex can go further with this. As a yearly event, like christmas and easter, Jagex should implement a "tax day". All players must go to another Jagex site and must fill out a form listing their income and its sources. There can also be tax credits implemented to reduce taxable income. As all things are tracked by Jagex, if a player unreports their taxes on tax day, they will be served a tax penalty. But if they overpay on taxes, the gold should just be taken no question.

In theory that could work but you'd really have to think carefully about the numbers
