To combat inflation, Jagex should stop adding unnecessary gold to the game via MTX if they are going to put a fee on the player base in GE transactions. As a player base, we deserve some accountability from Jagex and they should be doing everything they can to combat inflation on their end, rather than levying the burden of their MTX profits and the in-game repercussions of that on the player base. Removing cash bags may not be enough on its own, but it's certainly something that would help rather than continuing to make the problem worse.
#Jagex's role in combating inflation - Remove cash bags from MTX and events!

A good portion of players only participate in events if they come with the promise of money. I think cash bags are a part of the problem for sure, and removing them might help to some degree, but if you're going to remove "generating gp through mtx/events" from the equation, then you'd have to just make all cosmetics/tokens untradeable. But at that point you could kiss a lot of event participation goodbye. I think there are a lot of pros and cons to this and it's not quite as simple as "removing cash bags helps inflation"
That's not true, not all tradeable items contribute to inflation especially not cosmetics and tokens since those are consumable, the example you chose. The gold is transferring from one player to another, and the token is consumed forever as a cosmetic. That doesn't contribute to inflation. Cash bags specifically is money printing into the game, and it doesn't even delete an item like alching does in exchange.
I'd like to see the actual data on this, but my gut instinct is that the amount of gp coming into the game through MTX is pretty much irrelevant, but I also imagine it helps sell MTX
like, I wouldn't be surprised if the total amount of gp coming into the game from MTX was loosely equivalent to spiritual warriors alone
Or less than aday's worth of alchables from wildy flash events
quite. I think everyone agrees with the general position 'MTX bad' but I think it's also fairly clear that its economic impact is far greater when we consider things like portables or springs than raw gp
It's still unnecessary is the thing and at least those events take a little more time and effort for the increase in gold. I don't do wildy events or boss or pvm at the moment, but I'm making a free 5m just from afking fishing right now every time I get a purple present.
why are portables impacting the economy?they're almost worthless now
because they increase the supply of most products which interact with them by 10%
if not more
I think that's a flawed argument tbh. For example, with workbenches, most people didn't train construction like myself before because of the inconvenience of going into their POH to make flatpacks. There's probably a huge increase in the amount of planks leaving the game that is much greater than the 10% just sheerly because of the convenience of workbenches available at the GE to train construction on nearly every world.
construction's an isolated weird case
because there's no demand for the products
compare it to e.g. braziers or ranges
food is still a consumable item so it still doesn't apply to this conversation. The point of this is that jagex is making updates to introduce gold sinks into the game. We have food and potion item sinks already, just by the nature of those items being consumed for combat the extra portions of it are less relevant. There aren't many natural gold sinks in the game, they have to be introduced to offset it, which is the point of this post. Not the impact of MTX on the economy, and I think the increase in consumables is negligible. The point of the post also wasn't a comparison, I pretty explicitly stated it certainly isn't substantial enough to fix the problem, but it contributes to it, which is why it should be addressed. Let's have jagex do everything they can on their end if we have to carry the burden on ours as well.
it contributes in an almost totally irrelevant way
like, there would be no perceptible change from simply removing all gp drops from treasure hunter
as I've said, there is an 'MTX bad' argument which is reasonable, albeit played out and tedious
there's no worthwhile argument to be made that this would have any economic impact on the game
Disagree, you said yourself you don't have the data or a model for it, and the post is also about virtue signaling alone making it worthwhile. They should be showing us they're taking steps that require sacrifices on their end like removing cash prizes from mtx
you're treating a TH tax as a punishment to the playerbase, which is incorrect in the first place
there's really no real need for symbolic bollocks
Honestly, I've been oddmenting all but the red and purple cash sacks as far as direct monetary spin to win is concerned. The amount it gives compared to even just making alch fodder is pitiful.
Spin to win could be looked at, but not for direct or even the one-step-removed money stuff like springs.
