With the game improving and new things being added to the game, would Day & Night cycle and Dynamic weather/season system be possible for Runescape. I think a lot of people would like it and it would definitely improve the feel of the game. It would also make different times of the year special and make the game feel more lively.
#Day & Night cycle and Dynamic weather & season system

this was a runefest thing a few years ago and was abandoned on the basis that it was a huge job and didn't really change gameplay at all
If there is a day/night cycle, then giving gielinor a 25 or 23 hour day could be nice to make sure that no time zone is singled out
can we not have the normal 'fuck Australia' policy?
If it made a meaningful impact to skilling and combat it could be really fun and dynamic. By that I mean, an example such as Troodons in Ark are stronger at night. I could see where night and day could buff and debuff monsters, players, skilling, and areas. for example, If it is raining you have an increased chance to catch fish. If lightning strikes a tree, you can chop it for a chance to burn a log, Vampires could be stronger at night, nighttime in the desert doesn't require much water, but daytime is increased. Spawn rates could change depending on day/night. Like Lumbridge Goblins are more likely to spawn than spiders during the day, and vice versa at night.
It sounds like it could be interesting, but I don't think it would be impactful enough to warrant the time to develop. Time can be based on servers locale. so you could effectively hop worlds if you want day/night. and I think it would be shorter than 24 hours. maybe every hour weather changes since aura and timers commonly go by the hour. day/night could be every 3-4 hours.
yeah I hate the idea of things changing based on time of day
the game is already too dependent on the player being logged in at particular times
we should strive more towards the player logging into the same game every time
could work if account-specific I suppose if there was a mechanic to advance time
Weather can be cool, really add to an ambience & the immersion, but feel it's better restricted to occasional quest areas/moments (rooftop quest boss in the rain??), not the main game. Think I prefer screen to be simple when just going about my everyday business.
You'd have people potentially locked out of optimal xp/gp farming routes based on if they are willing to go without sleep or not. There's a reason why DXP weekend became DXP week with ability to pause. I'd like day/night as a sort of automatically changing skybox option, but you have to be wary about timed gameplay modifications.
Thats the reason that all the servers couldn't be on 25 or 23 hour cycles. if each was set on server start based on locale, then certain worlds would be day, and others would be night. weather would still be random. so if you wanted nighttime rain for a certain buff or debuff you would have to check servers on a night cycle and see if any had the random rain event.
I'm aware that if there's a way to maximize potential gains, that players will do what it takes to optimize for max gains. I don't think World hopping should be necessary, I do see how that design will encourage players to optimize XP by hopping worlds.
Without the mechanical dynamics affected by time and weather, as stated, a graphical improvement would not likely be enough on its own. But the F2P area graphic update was well received... so maybe there is potential for this to be just a graphical update.
Graphical updates can just be graphical updates.
Not every update should have to shake up the economy or add a new BIS item or whatever.
what would happen to places that are intended to be set to a specific ambience. draynor is supposed to be spooky I guess but if there is daylight it loses that. same applies to a lot of places.
how would weather etc affect performance.
what if they make a quest that requires u to be there at night and when it rains but your pc can't handle that for example. "can just toggle it" but then they get a advantage over the people that don't.
minor things but they have their weight on the matter
there's no reason as to why they couldn't just specify those areas as permanently dark
drakan specifically used magic to put the entirety of morytania into darkmode
i guess there's a massive light beacon now, so it's only partially true. but the logic still applies
but you already have skyboxes which are very resource consuming
