Hello! I'm helping to create and moderate a server for a friend of mine. They want to run it for a small community that will hopefully grow a lot bigger one day. However this is my first time making a server. I need help knowing what plugins are basically essential from a moderator and QoL standpoint and hopefully help on how to set those plugins up through the Bisecthostings plugin menu???

The server is run on PaperMC on the latest version of minecraft, I already have Geyser-Spigot and Floodgate-Spigot in the files (Set up how the Bisecthosting official guide says to do) but thats all I have done so far.

The face/owner on the server doesnt want any gameplay changes, they want something thats vanilla. However we have agreed that since its a community server we do need a "claim" plugin so that we can minimise griefing and no-one has their stuff stolen. Other than that, as long as there are no major gameplay changes id love to hear what everyone has to say! Thank you!

Numero uno is

Plugins ONLY.

Grief prevention can be used for claims.

Any “staffplus” or “staff” plugin should do as they all follow the same general consensus of supplying you with tools or commands to access players inventory, freeze them, track them, etc.

WorldGuard/world edit is also great for claims, it gives you more permission option that grief prevention such as whether mobs can spawn in that area, whether players take damage, whether they can drop items, etc.

When building your server as a new owner it’s best to run a trial and error rather than going 100% off of what someone tells you, install a few different ones, read up on their website on how they work and see which one fits your ideal mechanics the best, then go from there.

#

For setting them up sure you can ask someone but 99% of the time the page you download it from(this is why I use the actual website page over Bisects built in plugin searcher) will have clear as day instructions on what each command/item does and how to use it.

in addition just throwing this out there, as a hybrid server owner of years, if you ever want to step into the world of mods and plugins, Arclight, Magma, or Mohist are all good loaders for that. Personally over the years I’ve preferred Arclight, but again just throwing this out there in case you or the owner wants to include mods and plugins side by side

#

Also just noticed I did reply pretty quick to this as usual id recommend waiting for an actual staff reply before committing to anything as they may have more helpful/direct information and can actually guide you/the owner on how to install/use it

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your input! I was mentioning using Bisects plugin section since it seemed like an easier option for a beginner like myself but if it's better to use the plug ins websites then I'll probably go with that :)

My pleasure! I’ve been running servers for years so I’m used to doing everything the old school way xD if proper staff decides to chime in here and lend a hand definitely turn and ear to what they have to say as well! But if you’re comfortable traversing through the download pages of plugins to see how they work and which ones fit your goal the best, that’s never a bad option and mitigates repeatedly installing or uninstalling plugins xD

If he trusts you to, as long as you have a valid bisect account, he can always add you to “users” and give you full access or choose what you can access, so if anything goes wrong you’re able to say reset the world, or access specific folders and such

That's honestly the point we're at now, he was struggling with Geyser so I offered to help since I hyperfixate on this kind of thing really well. I guess you're right though I can actually reset the world if something goes wrong! There's just so many plug ins out there with multiple doing similar things. It's such a new world to me so I don't know which ones are good and which arent

#

And obviously since I'm not the person it's being made for... All I know is they want it to be a vanilla experience so I don't know what that line looks like

Ahhhh another person that hyperfixates on problem solving xD i love the mental gymnastics. Like i said ive created and owned multiple servers throughout the years, so if you want to get a bit descriptive with the "at minimum" of what the plugin should be to the best of your knowledge, for each one, and the exact version of the server i could help you find some to send to the owner
