What does the server currently have installed? You should be able to see this on the home page of the control panel under installed

[MC] Running mods/plugins

currently im just running minecraft java under installed it doesnt tell me anything else

rotund root
#

So just vanilla minecraft?

dry kayak
#

yes

rotund root
#

Vanilla minecraft won't run either plugins or mods, it doesn't know what those are :)

#

You'll need a loader installed on the server. For plugins thats something like paper/spigot. For mods thats something like Fabric or (neo)forge

#

So mods run on a different server type than plugins do. You'll need a hybrid loader to make both work, which we typically don't recommend for more inexperienced server owners since it can be quite a process to figure out which configuration does / doesn't play nice together. It is much easier to commit to only mods or only plugins, and go from there

dry kayak

okay! so i did find the 4 plugins i wanted to run, but which loader should i use for plugins then?

rotund root
#

Paper or Spigot are the most commonly chosen, really is about preference, either one of those is fine. They have some of their own optimization stuff but all in all aren't too different and both will run your plugins fine

dry kayak
#

ill go with paper then ^^ BUT i already tried using that by mistake when i first tried starting my server, and it wouldnt even run

#

i only have the vanilla minecraft and lunar client installed on my pc, which im guessing is why it wasnt working

rotund root
#

Paper only needs to be on the server and has nothing to do with what's on your PC whatsoever :)

dry kayak
#

okay, so i go into the jar selection and choose the most recent paper version, correct?

#

Also this isnt a rush job, if you run out of time i wont be upset

rotund root
dry kayak
#

done ^^ what do i do now

rotund root
#

Does the server start after switching to paper?

dry kayak
#

it actually is, which surprising

#

but yes it is

#

i can tell i should read the getting started guide

rotund root
#

Good! Once it's fully started, stop it again and then you can install the plugins.
You can try the plugin menu, if it seems like that doesn't work I would recommend manually downloading/uploading them, the plugin menu sometimes messes up a little

dry kayak
#

okay ill try that! give my a bit

#

so i installed the tree feller plugin, but i dont see a way to "upload"

rotund root
#

If you've used the plugin menu, you don't need to, the panel installs it for you. Did it show up in the plugins folder in your files?

dry kayak
#

it shows up as a 1,6mb .jar file in the plugin folder in my files

rotund root
#

Perfect, once you start the server again it should be active then

dry kayak
#

ill test it out real quick

#

okay! seems to be working just fine!

if i want to config the plugin specifically do i do that in the server console or from ingame console?

#

like i know the plugin is customizable, where would i do that? ^^

rotund root
#

Either, you just have to be /op if you want to do it ingame, but it could also be that there's a config file in which you have to change things (which is most common)

#

Which would mean stopping the server, heading to the config file, changing values to your liking, starting the server again

Each plugin does it differently. Some you have to edit the file, some you have to use commands, and some are dealer's choice like Jupie mentioned. 🙂

dry kayak
#

awesome, ill shut down the server and see if i can config the plugin then ^^

also how do i even give myself admin /op rights in game then?

There are also plugins that let you get more granular with those permissions. LuckPerms and PeX are the ones that get kicked around the most.
