#How to add more content to the server? (Plugins vs Mods)

hey i was wondering why most plugins/mods ive downloaded just dont work, the only ones that did work was a vein miner from a youtube vid and a grave plugin from the plugin section, took me forever to find these cuz no mods work

hot relic
#

Well, plugins and mods are two different things.

high light
#

ive downloaded stuff from modrinth and curseforge, and also used plugins from these 2 tabs

hot relic
#

So let's start with that.

Bukkit (RIP) made a Plugin standard that Spigot, Paper, Purpur, etc. implement. So to use Bukkit-style plugins, you need to be running one of those servers.

Mods use a modloader. Forge, Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, etc.

high light
#

how do i get a modloader?

hot relic
#

Datapacks are like plugins, but with more limited functionality. But they (should*) work with any type of server since it's something in the game from Mojang.

hot relic
#

You can't mix the two.

(Okay, so there are ways you can, but for someone who doesn't know there's a difference you're jumping into the deep end of the wave pool with weighted armbands...)

high light
#

i just want to be able to have things that change gameplay

hot relic
#

That's a start.

#

You need to know how you want to change gameplay to know where to go from here.

#

So let's start at the start.

high light
#

a few examples would be better chests, better end, graves, crops re planting themselves, stuff like that

hot relic
#

What Minecraft version?

high light
#

the latest

hot relic
#

Like literally "BetterChests" and "BetterEnd" or just improvements to chests and end generation?

high light
#

1.21.3

#

yeah

#

uh

#

chests like more chest type

#

end more end generation and mobs

hot relic
#

Okay - there are ways to do those with either.

If you were looking for the mod named BetterChests, that hasn't been updated in years and you'd have to run 1.12.2.

high light
#

i know that the mods have to be the same version of the game

#

i basically tested like a billion mods/plugins on the right version and most didnt work

#

other than the 2 already mentioned

hot relic
#

Let's start with the biggest blocker:

Are you okay with making your players install mods on their side, or should people be able to connect with plain out-of-the-box Minecraft?

high light
#

that would be all good my server is lunar client only

hot relic
#

How to add more content to the server? (Plugins vs Mods)

hot relic
high light
#

would it work to have both plugins and mods?

hot relic
#

That limits what you can change, but to the players they can use Lunar or plain Minecraft or Fabulously Optimized, Optifine, whatever.

hot relic
# high light would it work to have both plugins and mods?

Remember what I said about jumping in the deep end of a wave pool with weighted arm bands?

You'd have enough issues going down that path that to do anything more than point you to the wiki for the server that does both and make you read it yourself would be a disservice.

high light
#

ah

#

so basically using both plugins and mods makes it not work

hot relic
#

They aren't designed to work together.

high light
#

i see

hot relic
#

Plugins presume any items and mechanics are "vanilla-like" enough that when modded items start showing up they can freak out and crash, or just get buggy, or...

#

And vice-versa - mods don't know to listen to updates that plugins send to each other, so they get confused and...

#

It's like someone trying to speak Portuguese in Mexico - you can kinda understand some of it, but there's enough that doesn't match up to make it very difficult.

high light
#

are plugins able to have the same "stuff" as mods, like would it be possible that there is a plugin very similar to a mod

hot relic
#

Sometimes.

high light
#

an example being a better end plugin, and a better end mod

hot relic
#

It depends on the "stuff".

high light
#

or a graves plugin and a graves mod

hot relic
#

Plugins can change End terrain generation and introduce some variations on the existing mobs.

#

But unlike the BetterEnd mod, new blocks and trees are out.

high light
#

hmm

#

so which would be better to use for my server? like which would i be able to get better "gamelplay changes" (being everything that comes from mods and plugins) from

hot relic
#

There's a reason why I asked if you were okay with making your players install mods. And you said you wanted them to use an "effectively plain" client.

#

So either you change that decision or you're limited to plugins.

#

You could do that with mods - but what the mods can change are limited to what plugins can change, and you have to figure that out on a mod-by-mod basis as you put it together.

high light
hot relic
#

The mods have to limit themselves to the same types of things that plugins are inherently restricted to.

#

To the client it has to look like "plain" Minecraft.

high light
#

how do i make sure im not downloading mods and im getting plugins?

hot relic
#

You search for plugins.

high light
#

okay i see

hot relic
high light
#

where do i get the plugins from spigotmc?

hot relic
#

Under Resources

high light
#

oh okay, is there also plugins on curseforge?

#

or just mods

hot relic
#

There are, but AFAIK there aren't any plugins there that aren't in at least one of the other two, and their search is worse than Modrinth's.

high light
#

oh okay

#

are addons the same as plugins because on curseforge there is a tab called addons

#

also data packs too

#

i dont se plugins on curseforge

hot relic
#

Addons are for Bedrock.
