They still exist, and are called "mysterious conversion" recipes, but may be hardcoded

right clicking a blaze with a blaze burner is also a "mysterious conversion" recipe so unfortunately i don't think you'll be able to add your own, but i'll check the .jsons

Yeah unfortunately "mysterious conversion" doesn't exist as a recipe type outside of REI and JEI compatibility files

On 1.19 you can use reflection to create an item that extends the ChromaticCompoundItem class, which will give it the properties of chromatic compound, but it is hardcoded to turn into either Shadow Steel or Refined Radiance
