version: 0.14.5.5 and 5.6
playtime: 1 - 2 min.
Reproduce: start new game, then pick traits in work self. pick so much negative trait until around -21.
No mod
So I tried to min max like usual in CC, but years I've reduced from having negative trait to reach 0, add age to my character instead of staying 18. Honestly I don't mind the old age but it shorten my adventure seek chance just to get results I want before it force me to pick ship.
If this is intentional feature let me know.

I also already picked a few things on my char there, but haven't run into the issues you mentioned.
how much options you've picked (roughly) for this to happen? according to the first screenshot I would guess a lot.
Yes Like around -27 to -30 then the rest I picked is all skill trait
So you're saying that the math of positive/negative traits shows the proper/expected result within the Work on Self menu... but hitting Apply at the end doesn't then apply the math correctly?
Yes, somehow those high -trait turn into +trait cost. There must be some bug happened when -trait points reach certain -numbers, I highly think the limit that the bug appear its -21. Kinda like the numbers were too much that it goes over limit that it start to leak over the wrong trait cost calculation.
I ran into the same thing. As far as I could tell, it applies the trait years against your character's current age one at a time, but won't go below 0.
The Work on Self screen showed I was getting a 0 age difference, but since I used more points than my age, I ended up aging up to match points used.
ie.
I can be 27 and use 15 points with no issue, as 15 < 27.
If my character is 27 and I use 30 points in one go, I can end up being 30 y/o.
I did go through gaining points all at once and then spending them, and I'm not sure if it would have happened if I mixed gaining and losing points since it appeared to track them in the order I applied them.
ie.
I did -30 +30 = 0
vs -15 +15 -15 +15 = 0
I'll add details if I end up making a new character.
since I used more points than my age
Oh, interesting, maybe that's the whole key to it. Like, the game code doesn't want to allow the character to nerf themselves down to an age like -5 years old or whatever, but somehow the code is batch applying negatives before moving on to batch applying the positives or something instead of actually doing everything all at once as the Total Cost would suggest.
I think the "batching" might have been my order of operations. I removed a ton of positive traits I was using to bank points and then spent them all, in the process aging my down to/past 0.
I'm going to check if I mix adding and removing traits, so I never pass 0 years old, avoids the issue.
So, it appears that order of operations matter.
In this screenshot I have 30 points at age 25. I did small additions and removals and my final age is 25 as indicated in the Work on Self preview in the right panel.
Additionally, if I take enough positive traits to age past 28 and then remove other positive traits to go back to/under 28, I still get stuck with the negative effects of middle age.
Starting at age 25
- Add 3 years of traits (just before middle age)
- Add 1 year of traits (get middle age negative traits)
- Remove 1 year of traits
- Apply
I now am under the middle age threshold but keep the middle age negative traits since I crossed the line in the process.
You even appear to cross the age multiple times, and I assume you could get the negative traits, remove them, and regain them again in a single Work on Self if you weren't careful.
Now if I try to batch the point gain (-age) and point spend (+age) I have -33 banked but am only 28 years old. (screenshot 1)
I spend it all to get net 0. (screenshot 2)
And then I'm now 33. (screenshot 3)
When reviewing my resume after I can see that multiple years in a row it had my age at 0.
