I think one issue with Pokémon battle music is that it kinda has to be ambient because people can take as long as they like to not do anything? You can't have any climactic hits with a big musical moment because it just won't line up
I'm not sure if Sword/Shield did but they definitely need to use Toby Fox for some boss battle music because he's great at that shit
And yes I'm well aware the music isn't connected to actual battle in Undertale either but I think it generally handles it better. Pokémon music isn't bad by any means, but for some reason Undertale and Deltarune are easier to listen to out of context. Can't put my finger on why.

Well yeah, a gimmick is literally anything. This is more referring to the specific battle mechanic added each gen to shake things up. And I really don't think it matters if it sticks around or not, it doesn't change what it was/is in its introduction
