OK, to clear up some confusion on the avian competition, here are some guidelines:
Aim to make it look like a bird. This means bird features (beaks and stuff, you know birds. You must have seen birds, they're everywhere), bird body shapes (scientifically birds are shaped like beans, but there are technically other shapes out there), etc. As much like a bird as you can.
If it is clearly a bird, it is clearly a bird. Congratulations you have a bird.
If it is not clearly a bird, aim for 70% bird (lowering my previous bar a bit, but it's still an A in bird where I'm from). Have as many bird features as you can without ruining your original concept, is the point. There will be no scientific checks for bird percentage, just submit what you personally feel is bird enough. If it is 0% bird I will smite you.
Do not just submit frogs.

I think it depends, some people put them in Spritework before they submit and already feel happy with them. Others wait until after to get feedback, so some people are just done with the sprites whereas others wait to improve theirs after contests. 😅
