Not only are you a great spriter in your own right, but contest losses are not indicative of skill. A lot of it comes down to style preferences; a lot of voters like really elaborate, intricate designs, though sprites that are simpler aren't inherently bad at all. 🙂
I had the same worry recently, but staying true to your style and enjoying spriting is way more important than an arbitrary number of votes it gets in a contest. 😄

Yeah I'd definitely say you are, on one end it's the actual sprite (not cramming too many details in there, having shading you'd expect from the Pokémon style), and in another it's just the design, not making it too busy. I say this as someone who really dislikes a lot of the Ultra Beasts, just to know where I'm coming from. Too busy. 😅
