The eye comment is a joke from what I can tell, on the wings the lightb pink color next to the white looks natural to the judge but where the dark gray of the left wing touches the light pink it doesn't look quite as natural

Overly rendered stuff doesn't win, but they gotta be rendered enough to look clear and good with all of their parts. If everything is extreme eye candy, the judges' eyes will hurt and they dock points for that.

I remember one of the first times I made a fully custom sprite from scratch, my carbink/bulbasaur, that I entered into a contest got a spotlight despite it probably being rather plain and coming from someone who wasn't that experienced at the time. So, I thought I'd post some quick images here for the people that feel a certain way about contests. These are images I made with each of them about 8-10 year apart from each other. (I would like to redo the mermaid again at some point, but for now this one has to do ) I believe putting people on a pedestal isn't always a good thing and can dehumanize someone, who you think is better than yourself. I could say a lot about "you can also be better with enough time" but I honestly just wanna show, that my skill was a lot less refined in the past. I gotta work to not get rusty, the skill doesn't come from nothing. And, ya know, it is okay to be frustrated and voice that, but you need to redirect that energy into learning, not into crying. I'm a sore loser for video games (which is why I don't do competitive gaming), so I know the feeling and know it is not productive and only serves to make the people around you uncomfortable in most cases. Like they should not need to appologize to me for winning a game they are good at and I could get better at if I put the effort.

I mostly got better at drawing by looking up towards people better than me and adapting parts of their styles and techniques, so splitting contests into better and worse spriters probably would have demotivated me to no end as a beginner artist. Like basically what is my win even worth, when I cannot even try to measure up to the big guns?

Anyway, that is my little take on that, but it is also just fun to share progression pics especially when you are ancient like me and the time jumps are so massive.

i love seeing progression pics! its interesting how quickly people can improve and how... subtle? it is! like you may not notice any changes in your art at all, but then you look at a picture from like 6 months prior and you can tell just how much you've ikmrpoved

unfortunately comparisoins always happen, but it is always important to think "is this my own style?" "how far along are they?" "how oftne do they do this" and if that doesn't help, then don't use others art as a roadblock, but a motivation! find things you like! try to interate those things into your own art! if that doesn't help, find out what it is that you are struggling with and practice!

I figure I can show my old sprites if it motivates someone as well. I was a little overzealous and tried to use a little custom bases as possible and make my own concepts with no prior art experience (I also started my art journey with no experience like DaTorre)

I recommend remaking some of your old sprites every once in a while. Really helps build confidence and gives you a visual representation of your growth

You would submit whichever one you think is a better piece, but only submit one or the other rather than both

I'd say the regular is your best bet for the contest. While the cauldron has some really nice effects and lighting, the top of the cauldron doesn't have the right perspective and they'll notice that. Also they might score the more traditional sprite more favourably

If you send two sprites that are very similar, one of them will likely end up with less points for not doing anything new
