There's different ways to go about making sprites and different goals a spriter may have, there's so much personality and flavor people bring that they make their sprites theirs that a judge sheet could never capture... I'd also just be a shit judge because I'd probably end up making everyone a winner unless your sprite straight up breaks the basic spriting guidelines but ya know

I followed everything exactly from both the magmortar and Entei sprites and I got marked down for it

At least I redid the sprite and submitted a better version for gallery

The rules (the expanded ones) specifically say that you may polish up animation sprites and adjust shading to match the fusion, it just forbade huge adjustments to those where it wouldn't make sense or would make the base sprite unrecognizable. ||I don't even sprite and I followed that bit.
It's really a general sprite standard to ensure that any bases from the games have errors fixed on them, when making a custom base or using a game base for a fusion, so it seemed like a natural extension to that best practice for the contest.||

Make a portfolio of your work and keep updating it with new/better stuff, there are many sites out there to do this with, posting them somewhere also raises legitimacy as a lot of art/commissions scams happen every day

If you don't have any commissions and you have a low amount of work on your preferred site, start making stuff in general to show you're making content

In all seriousness though, I'm very anti-competitive, people being competitive is a huge detractor for me

being competitive is good cuz it mostly means improve or force yourself to reach great but when youre too much into it, it can make you sacrifice your fun for it, and thats definitely bad

Which ones? I think most sports are either boring, overly convoluted, or overly aggressive, yes.
I'd challenge you to give one example of a national or international sports league that isn't highly corrupt and doesn't exploit the players and fans just for the almighty dollar.
I also find it terribly dull when people can only have meaningful conversation about sports. There's so much more in life to discuss, and so many better things, and yet it always goes back to sports

I've also never understood the fascination with watching games. I'd rather play the game or do something else, nearly ANYTHING else, watching a sports game is like watering the lawn during a monsoon, it's totally pointless
