i love the idea of a Salvage event, esp. a speed spriter salvage
but the rubric definitely needed to be ironed out ahead of time
even a line about making sure you can both keep the spirit of the source and make it recognizable as a traditional fusion or smth

The problem is if the source is clearly not a traditional fusion in both how it looks and intent/concept, it goes against the point of salavaging to change it to be traditional

i think there was a conflict there between what the salvage team want (keep the sprite as similar as you can within reason) and the judging team (used to looking at traditional efforts committing entirely to the regular guidelines)

honestly spriting as a hobby doesn't necessitate a ton of time, you can try out a little bit every so often, plus we have a lot of resources here to help, you don't have to start out with super crazy sprites like you see in all of the youtube videos and contests, no pixel artist has ever just magically been perfect at it, you learn with experience, you may not be able to get as much as everyone else in the same period of time, but that's fine, all that matters is you've made some sprites that you're happy with(and that fit the guidelines )

we were still havign less then a 100 fusions but imagine having to sprite around 900 fusions in a month an a half (it started in january and lasted until the lunar new year) it was the longest rush ever and we didn't complete both

I remember we decided the most viable compromise would be to do the Pinkan Island thing and just color the overworld body ‘mon with the head ‘mon’s colors
But it would still be a ton of work to implement

I’m a little miffed that the brunt of my feedback was “I don’t know why this frogfish has frogfish features”. Would’ve preferred to have more exact technical feedback than “there are shading errors”
I can add the line to the body to break up the tail, though

Like, a feedback-focused contest would be neat? But it would have to be designed around it

The PIF system is built around the bulk of your feedback coming through your spritework thread, where the feedbacker and the spriter can converse to make sure both sides understand

the design does not really give off frogfish- or any specific species of fish, it is hard to see that reference- also the feebas base is at a angle so its rather odd for the legs to be stanced in this manner. and also do you mean batfish? i remember you looking at them before the contest, why choose a fish body that is vertical then?

I feel like my experience with contests has been me being like, "This sprite is surely sufficient for the criteria at hand", and then the judges make me aware of 50 different problems, all unrelated to each other, with said sprite that I didn't even consider before entering. Tldr I think I get a little unsure of myself when it comes to the quality of my sprites.

you gotta keep an eye on your "negative spaces" as well. working with a 3x3 brush only works best when all the spaces can fit that 3x3 brush. I can see several spots on the claws and on the tail pattern that end up too slim and would not translate well It is very pretty and lots of areas work perfectly, but I don't think you will escape the detail criticism all the way
