It’s a difficult balance. Small often needs to be very clean or a really nice idea otherwise contest quality of other entries might bury it and big is also easy to mess up because more is there haha but also more potential. It’s all swings and roundabouts tbh, no guaranteed formula despite trying your best and practice. Even then judges all think differently because it’s not just 10 of the same person, your entry might spike or fall flat on one particular judge or another

I'd say it's the opposite you should do, you should work on expending your comfort zone
absolutely you can draw stuff that is familiar and you feel comfortable with but you should also do stuff you find difficult

very fair advice. And i do definitely do that too. The average score i got in by air was over 8, which is insane for a sprite where i tried to keep it as basic and gamefreak-like as possible (on top of being not-fully-evolved). Could not predict a result that good for it tbh even though i personally considered it a rock solid sprite. Usually my simple ones don't do that well, but they also tend to be a bit more an asset flip tbf

to me keeping things simple, and therefore a bit closer to gamefreak is largely about avoiding extra self shadowing (eg, behind the arm/the closest leg). This is something i always want to do for "realism" but is usually only done by GF when it has to be.
Other things to consider are that not every face/edge/curve needs a highlight just because it points towards the light source (the eye socket/forehead).
Also not everything needs a complete line - implying detail aids simplicity.
And the final thing is that background elements get less vibrant colours and muted outlines when you can only just peek them (eg behind the nose)

Basically the left is simple and "better" because they knew when to say "enough is enough"

really wish i hadn't used nosepass for this. The light direction is kinda all over the place

but to be fair that's kinda the point. Although broadly lit from the top left, a pokemon sprite is just lit in whichever way conveys the shape best

And everyone knows how to read the gen 5 nosepass, unlike the gen 3 one 😛

when it comes to contest scoring, I've found that even when I've been sideeying a singular judge score like "that seems overly harsh/generous.." I will say one thing, the score 'average' has generally always reflected what I feel the sprite should be scoring so the system works in the end. Freedom of opinion was also very stressed from some judges that it play a part alongside following the judging guidelines so you will see outliers in score, yeah. Try not to focus too hard on it

also this, a score of 5/10 isn't even in bad territory, it's about the same level as a gamefreak sprite and perfectly acceptable. It's just that the ceiling is very high now for quality, so many sprites made for IF can shoot way higher than what gamefreak needed/wanted

Current system has other judges scores hidden, but we have a brief period at the end where they're unhidden intended so that any judges with outlier scores can give a comment explaining why they scored that way, or adjust their scores a little if they feel warranted

I have a tendency to overshoot my numbers sometimes, so I like adjust based on comments at the end because people point out things I didn't consider

But also variation in score is kinda just a part of multiple judges. The guidelines are a good thing to keep in mind, but they're just recommended, not enforced. I kinda feel like if we had strict scoring, there'd be no point in having multiple judges, because everyone would give the same number
