i do have a question about the pillowshading and banding, though. i used this base as a reference (daena's down, so i can't give the link), and to me it looks like that's just how poliwag is shaded?

I wouldn't call what you have pillow shading personaly but some people just do that when the light sources comes more from the center instead of left like it should and you kinda have that going on with how much of the torso is lit when combined with how round it looks

you could turn it from a band to typical AA, still should make it feel smoother than typical no AA shadow

as an additional note, the "banding" is used here to show a gentle transition as the body curves away from the light. For some parts of your sprite the shadow is cast by parts of the body. This means the shadow isn't a gentle change in light, but a defined line, and so omitting the transition colour (except for AA because these colours are very different) helps show that difference in lighting conditions
