they're disabled because otherwise way too much gets shaded and it works better to add them in manually to sprites with a lot less area than the "realistic" light would give

ah, I can't take the same gif with the shadows on because they don't live update in the preview (and I can't easilly animated that specific light orbit for a render)

he'd have a giant tongue shadow and not much light getting to his right leg with cast shadows on

I find it works better to ignore some of that for spriting, it looks good as long as the light is interacting correctly with the volume with limited cast shadows (and it's easier for new spriters that need a light direction tag to not have to worry about random giant shadows getting cast down realistically across the surfaces)

lickilicky doesn't have too many random bullshit in the way of the light (just the tongue and a bit of belly), but believe me, it works better for making bases this way (for most mons at least)
