I more love the lore of alola than anything else. Specifically the cultural significance of the trials and z-crystals. It made it feel special given how utterly irrelevant mega evo had been to the entire Kalos region.

I didn't love z-crystals but they were at least not awful like Megas. I mean SO MANY of the Mega evolutions apparently caused tremendous physical pain to the Pokémon, that's awful.

yeah in regular pixel art I tend to avoid pure black, it just looks better. but for this style you will probably need some actual black outlines as well as your dark coloured outline here

Because his body is a literal source of light. It makes no physical sense for there to be hard black edges on his body as such. The dark grey is still dark enough to be obvious but softens the contrast. It's also a pain to sort out the shading on the plates since they have light coming from so many directions.

Yep, that's why I use a 4-5 color gradient when I make glow effects, and shade those spots as if they weren't glowing. All the shades I use are brighter than the surrounding sprite so it still looks illuminated. Plus I can just recolor with darker tones on a separate layer and make a blinking GIF.

Actually I always make a no-glow version first to get the shading right. Then introduce the bright colors on a new layer
