I figure the idea is pretty much to make sure you can fit the game aesthetic/pokemon style as a baseline, so nobody would later say "I only work in x style" or something

I think the guideline is that it has to be immediately obvious what the component pokemon are - any new features coming in have to make sense for the component pokemon and not make it look like it could be anything else

Yeah I'm not a sprite manager and I got the spriter role really early on before the guidelines were all ironed out, so I can't speak to exactly what counts. I'd maybe worry about the face looking like a mask on that one because I don't get where the mask element comes from, but it's very easy to tell at a glance that that's sensu-ambipom

There's a difference between a sprite being a reference to something and being inspired by something, but putting that difference into words is bloody hard

Yeah I think I sorta see what you mean. The reason Ambipom has a mask is because I wanted to make a Bloons reference with Oricorio and that's what came to mind, as opposed to if I saw something and thought "Oh, that's like these two Pokemon, I should make a fusion based off of that"
Though the motive might not be FULLY attached, like with the Trevenant contest where I came up with a reference for a specific franchise but it's so off-the-wall to fit that it hardly comes off as a reference

I have a few reference mains myself, the trick is to have them just genuinely feel like a fusion of the two pokemon first and foremost. machamp/deoxys being ultraman makes sense since it's a shared inspiration of their original designs, and mewtwo-machoke as darkseid works because darkseid kinda has that mewtwo energy but is comic book swole

the problem is that a lot of, if not most of, reference fusions are just very 'forced' and don't genuinely feel like a resulting fusion of the two component pokemon, or look stylistically out of line with pokemon

I do a test where I show someone my sprite without the fusion name and ask them to guess the two mons, to see if it's clear enough

Yeah, i give a lot of slack to reference fusions but sometimes using a reference as inspiration behind a design can help elevate your fusion. It just depends on how you use the reference

both those examples i'd say are great fusions that use their reference very well!
