I adore gen 6 and 7 solely cause of nostalgia, 6 over 7 cause 6 was my first pokemon game, though i enjoyed 7 more Gen 5 is my favorite (all of the games in it) Sword and Shield felt like a lot of it was rushed and lazt, like they cut out the dex for better animations but the animations still look bad, and the dlc makes you pay 30 dollars extra for the most expensive pokemon game so far just to make Sword and Shield not be bad (I dont hate sw/sh but it really isnt great) And with Pokemon home it makes you lock your favorite pokemon which should have been in the base game already just to have them transferred over, they also removed a lot of aspects of the previous games and locked them behind a paywall

I think Pokemon SwSh was okay... I liked the music I guess... Everything else was meh. It scores an 8/12 on my rating scale which is kinda low compared to other pokemon games

Gen 3: 10 points (the pokemon and region is fire)
Gen 4: 11 points (blows the other 3 gens out the water, some music isn't too cool/memorable tho)
Gen 5: 12 points (music, pokemon, region and story is flames)
Gen 6: 9 points (the pokemon are slightly forgettable, the music is nice and so is the region, the story is cool too.)

Gen 8: 10 points (region was fire, pokemon is fire but forgettable, the music is flames too, and the story is aight.)

I think that the character development counts as story. I guess the "mystery" of the legends of the game is also kind of a story too.
Overall, story is worse than gen 1 and 2 but not by much.
Pokemon could make their stories just a bit more immersive by including more non-choice dialogue options and player character expressions. At least make it seem like the player character is invested in the plot a little.
They did something in gen 7 by using Hau to make you feel more invested in the plot. Hop was an attempt to do the same thing, but it was less effective.
