I think the existence of magcargo and how ass it is compared to the other two fire/rock type pokemon is a testament to how fire rock is a relatively good typing that cannot be both slow and have terrible bulk

Like the 2nd fire/rock type pokemon being the Coalossal proves that a defensive fire/rock type pokemon is viable (at least until restricted pokemon enter the format)

(having 80 extra stat points certainly helps coalossal but still)

I mean as a Singles player Coalossal isn't really good

But there is 0 doubt that it is at least 50 thousand times better than Magcargo

Its type is definitely problematic for it though

Fire/Rock's a type that's not amazing defensively but absolutely great offensively

And unfortunately, both Coalossal and Magcargo are defensive Pokemon

Quad weakness to Ground and Water with a weakness to Fighting and Rock is horrible

But at least it's a relatively low number of weaknesses

And a decent number of resists

Hisuian Arcanine is the best out of the bunch and not-so coincidentally it is also the most offense oriented of the bunch

Rock Head Flare Blitz + Head Smash is rather potent offensively

And you learn Close Combat which hits every other Pokemon for at least neutral

While getting a Quad SE hit on the most important Pokemon that resists both STABs, Tyranitar

And you have Extreme Speed for priority

It is still not really fast enough though

And thus the type's poor defensive properties is an issue again

Like you want to run a Choice set but you'd get chipped down way too quickly by hazards, with a Stealth Rock weakness and vulnerability to Spikes

And without a Band, you can come up short on damage

And without a Scarf, you're too slow

And in the end, the most common set ends up being a Stealth Rock user

Because it has too many flaws to be amazing as a choiced mon

Does use Choice Band in OU, though
