here's the boundary between Unova and Alola for me
Unova has a better story and characters (very slightly), and a better map design (easier to traverse and whatnot)
Alola has a better roster of new Pokemon and better graphics (although this is obviously a bit unfair since it's 3DS not DS), and better QOL (primarily in Ride Pokemon instead of HMs, total lifesaver)
and the additional Unova games are sequels rather than expansions, which is a point in their favor too
