Start small

That and learn to accept feedback and criticism. Especially here, where the feedback can be very direct and blunt. Most here are happy to help beginners if they're willing to accept feedback. Take this from me- I struggle with it still and it's not very fun.

Personally I started with palette swaps re: starting small. And my first fusion sprites were mostly splices of smaller, simple mons. Don't try to go for, say, Rayquaza/Arceus for your first sprite.

I think mine would be watch a bunch of tutorial both on spriting (learn to make clean lines without jaggies) AND traditional art esp. how to use light and shadow without "pillow-shading". Those are the first and most basic mistakes

Aside from the very basics, my first tip is keep your color palette down, it's easy to just want to add more detail, but especially for the Pokemon artstyle, you want to keep a cartoon look, not soft shading.

I'm thinking in sunlight it gets very stiff and slow... Maybe falling into a sort of hibernation type slumber and thus getting mistaken for statues. Also probably has Dry Skin.
