Symbols do not create their own meanings. Meaning can only come from the one interpreting.
What this means is that, for example, the word "tree" does not have anything to do with a tree. There's nothing about that combination of letters (or sounds if it's spoken) that actually signifies a tree. BUT everyone thinks it does, which means it does. The consensus among English-speakers is that the word "tree" refers to, you know, a tree. So if you try to use that word to mean anything else, YOU have miscommunicated, because you went against the consensus. There's a bit of wiggle room, such as the tree in "skill tree", but that's similar enough that it was added to the consensus definition of "tree".
