but for most kids yea it's a very effective stop since starter's stab move go brbrbrb (and gen 1 being heavily biased against geodude made it a hard sell despite johto being a much more favorable region for it)

No. The weapons you choose depend on how your stats and abilities roll. For example choosing the shield will give you more defensive abilities and sword will increase your strength and give you more attack based abilities

Your defense won't go up as much but it'll still be decent. I've gone sword and dumped shield before and mostly I was fine aside from a couple annoying bosses. It is good to have that extra bar of magic for some more useful spells.

You can level using Wakka on Destiny Island. Tech Points are only in KH 1 and happen when you successfully deflect attacks (So use them frequently they give baby exp)
Wakka (The guy with the volleyball) will chuck his ball at you and if you smack it back to him it gives you exp due to the tech point system

Make sure to pay attention to the NPC dialogue. Kingdom Hearts 1 is NOT good about screaming in your face where to go... especially in the world opposite of traverse town... but you'll be mildly less lost if you make sure to take note of it lol

Something you can try is staying close-ish to Cerberus while dodging the dark orbs and if you're lucky he'll stop and start melee attacking. When he raises up to do a shockwave, jump.

giving up sword is easier to plan around than giving up rod
and picking morning would mean harder levelups toward the end

I can't decide if I should restart from what y'all said it sounds like I'm in for a world of pain and tough bosses but the thought of beating this on like almost the hardest way possible is amazing bragging rights
I mean I could always start on a second save and decide which I like more when I catch up
