To be fair if chat GPT queries can finish like a graphic or a long text in a short amount of time the environmental impact will be less than having a high end computer turned on for 30 mins to hours depending on how much the work load is.

Right now the technology is relatively inefficient but once the programs and servers become more efficient it will in all likelyhood it will end up consuming less power and resources.

But that is how all technology starts at one point. CPUs used to consume hundreds of watts of power yet they only ran on megahertz of energy.
