Look at that thing and tell me it doesn’t look like a wussy loser and yet, inexplicably, they’re one of the most intense extremophiles, the most intense macroscopic extremophiles save maybe the volcano sharks that may get an entry soon. Tell me why they can survive being completely frozen solid. 100 percent frozen, including ALL their internal organs. And then they just. Can thaw out? It’s absurd. An outrage. They live in salt flats with water so alkaline it would MELT YOUR SKIN. also it’s BOILING. they DRINK IT ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY. These glorious pink bastards lay EGGS THERE and when the chick inevitably either falls into the boiling water and gets their skin melted while being prepared for whatever chef comes across them in the future, or when their chicks accumulate so much salt while they grow that when they should be able to fly and migrate with the flamboyance (real name of a group of flamingo(e)s, one of the few wins they have in my book), they literally can’t because of salt forming around their feet and up their legs because they’re born in the most inhospitable place for life outside of the literal void of space. Their migrations, also, include some of the greatest movements between altitude EVER. They’re so extra for nothing.

Also everything about their anatomy is, to put it lightly, a travesty to the good birds that came before it and the dinosaurs before them, so on into eternity with the very first quark involved with igniting the Big Bang. Their beaks are upside down because they’re born couldn’t FATHOM just having one of the MANY OTHER beak types that fishing birds. The pelican build would have suited just fine but NOOO they have to be FREAKS. Their knees are backwards also and it’s just really uncomfortable to watch bend and stuff.
Also their beaks don’t function properly for anything but scooping water (which the pelican beak does JUST fine, and it still functions in every other way a standard beak should without specializations), which leads to them having to do the crocodile death roll but only with their neck, which results to a bird bite, which already sucks, just twisting your flesh like a blender that’s not sharp enough to mince but can for SURE leave lacerations.
Their funky little mating rituals are awesome though 10/10.

Unlike in most games where you can make characters BG3 only let's you select presets. Only habe around 8 faces per race and 4 bodytpes
The only change to a face you can do is Skin color. Eye color. Hair. And I they have freckles

Admittedly the main difficulties are getting it to run and getting used to the controls and thus how to switch between things as necessary but like all survival games once you get the hang of what's what, the complexity is less figuring out 50 things at once and more how to not get beaten up and eaten by cannibals while attending to 3 or 4 necessities and then take care of the other stats.
But that's about as far as my direct experience playing went, the part about getting beaten up.

i think it is because 'ɑ' is an ipa symbol, like hakim said, but there could be some other reason. 'a' is also a different sound in the ipa. this chart pronounces most of the sounds in the ipa so you can see what they sound like:
