In my rewatch of Adventure Time and my knowledge of future events, I came to a realization that Finn and Jake are the main reason Ice King is insane.
Like, yes he was crazy, but when he was on his own in the first few appearances, he was pretty rational, just wanting to be left alone (and marry a princess). After taking a beating over the next 3 appearances and being called lame, he slowly got crazier until he tried to make a love potion (and accidentally made his heart gain sentience)
But those between epusodes, where he’s constantly interacting with F&J see him slowly devolve into madness, until by the third one, he’s completely cracked just by fact that they kidnapped him and locked him in a cell under Bubblegum’s orders.
Until that point, he just has a case of increased obsessions caused by the crown, but overall he was still in control of himself. So we can blame F&J for his ever worsening dementia like symptoms forcing him over the edge. And it’s not until they learn his past and start treating him differently that he starts to get better.

In other media, a way to put it is the various Fallout games are continuations, except New Vegas as a spin off because it was made by an external studio. Same for the various Pokémon spin-offs.

In the case of House of the Dragon, it was not set up in the previous show, just subsequent expanded materials. So it is in continuity without being a spin-off
