it would just be easier in the long run to not bother adding in forms for the mons that could have them that are already in the game prior to when forms were added

so no rotom, aegislash, giratina, etc.

the original reason for forms not being factored was due to the limitations of how fusions were coded, that is no longer the case; but, there's not much merit going back and adding in the forms that came with mons that should have had them

but aegislash was considered briefly after forms became a thing but eventually the idea got scrapped because it would mean having to separate out the sprites that were sword form and shield form from each other, attributing them appropriately, and then having to get new sprites made for any fusions that now lack a custom sprite thanks to that change

thus why i said mons that were meant to have forms got removed from the equation

only new mons that get added that have forms will have it

I for one prefer Aegislash as is cause the difference between shield and sword mode is too subtle to really be worth splitting up the sprite pool, and the way Stance Change works makes for interesting stategic builds with defensive Pokémon

What about programming the stats, moves and secondary typings, without changing the appearance?
So a Rotom/Wailord could have all of the possible types use the same sprite, without adding new ones, while also using Rotom's actual stat spread.

Or they could just make Rotom have the stats of the appliances and remove the eviolite function.
That would make Rotom a bit easier to use as a fusion.

but the first bit defeats the purpose of sprites

The function in the official games that recolors those areas for the spots while maintaining shading works by replacing specific beige shades with corresponding red shades. This would require that all spinda sprites use the same palette or we manually add cases for every custom color like a more extensive version the current shiny system.
Another issue comes from the size of the spots. The standard size of those spots might completely cover a Cleffa while barely doing anything on a Palkia. The solution to this might be allowing the player to choose custom sizes of dots, but I doubt the lore could even support the initial proposition of simply moving them.

So Frog solo dev'd pif 1, and the project actually started a decade ago. He's learned a lot in that time and has improved as a developer and programmer. Plus at the time, he did everything himself which includes everything with rpg maker, coding in ruby, rewriting some of the code from essentials, asset management, etc. There are things in pif1 that are hard to undo since it was more or less spaghetti code, but we're starting semi fresh this time so he can do a lot of things better. We're using pif1 code as a base, but there's a lot that he's able to work through better. My hope that it will genuinely feel better to play

But for what you mentioned specifically, some of those things are unfortunately part of the consequences of using rpg maker. For everything you see there is a tile, and you only have 3 layers to work off of so each tile plays nice with each other. But if I'm being perfectly honest, you actually only really have 2 layers to work off of, as the first layer is predetermined to have the ground. Otherwise it would be plain white everywhere. But yeah, in the end having more of a team helps tackle some of these issues since it was a lot to handle by himself. I help out with some pif1 things, but all credit goes to him and what he accomplished in his free time

Oh yeah, it's a real treat to work with. And you really cant multidev well with rpg maker every git pull overwrites your own local files, so you need to coordinate. Otherwise I could easily mess up a map and overwrite the master version of that file. It's something lol

The way we did it is by creating a certain amount of maps that he doesn't touch, and that's reserved for whatever I make with them. Once it's finished, he'll properly put it with everything and then can make fixes. He's a wizard with the program and I only started learning a few years ago. I can't do any of the hard core complicated things that he can but I can make pretty maps and simple quests!

The big thing I really hope for is something that's a ways away from being part of the design, and that's making the water routes feel more distinct. Stuff like ruins around the area where the Regi puzzle happens, a mangrove marsh by Mossdeep, more icy stuff by the shoal cave, etc

That was a little different. Rockruff was announced a month before it was actually available in the game. I had to do some special things in the background to make that possible, otherwise rockruff wouldn't have had sprites in the game for that update, since it came out a few weeks before the spritepack that would have contained the sprites. It caused a lot of issues and I told frog never again with this, if its a surprise than no one would have made sprites at all for it
