In real life, mushrooms can be cultivated by inoculating logs with spores and placing the logs in ideal conditions

this would allow the player to produce different types of mushrooms seasonally without having to forage for them

you could make it so that different mushroom varieties require different conditions and wood varieties (and log orientations)

in order to balance it you could make it so that mushroom yields decline over time, or some sort of penalty for other nearby mushroom logs

Big thing for me is that it should be finnicky, IRL you gotta disinfect everything real carefully lest you end up growing mold

#

We should at least have to boil the substrate

silent siren

yeah thats what i was thinking tbh

Maybe use alcohol to disinfect other stuff too

silent siren

i do also think they should make mushrooms more seasonal/weather dependent

Mushroom cultivation would be pretty nifty, but I will confess to thinking 'why would I bother for 20 less satiety to normal farm crops?' Imo rn mushrooms fall once you get even a couple harvests from a farm.

Buuuut then, do mushrooms grow quicker IRL?

tall knoll

Mushrooms grow fast as fuck

Cascadiamushrooms says their oyster mushrooms take like 2 weeks to grow

Hot damn

They also keep growing, you can get 3 harvests per kit

#

Oh and some can grow in woodchips

Ooo, debarking logs could give the bark as an item to be mulched

tall knoll
#

I'd assume they like the bark, might protect the mycelia and help trap moisture

Yup.
