#Better beehives

should require nails or something. something that makes it more valuable. and it shouldn't be portable - not in the way that skeps are. i think skeps should still have a place in transporting bee colonies.
i also think it should have a much lower chance of angering the bees, seeing as youre not destroying their hive every time.
Yess i think you are right
There are mods like From golden combs, but I think that one made beekeeping a bit too annoying with the amount of things you have to do. Ceramic hive from there is rather nice tho, so there's that.
these weren't invented until 1875, so I don't think they fit the technological theme of the game and should be reserved for addition via mods, not in the base game.
the thing is that langstroth hives are extremely low tech. they require technology as basic as woodworking to construct, and their late invention is an extreme outlier.
making a wooden chest is considerably more difficult endeavour
Everything seems obvious when you already know about it 😛
The hives are not some modern tech. you could have had them several thousand years ago without any problems
only reason people didn't was because bees were treated as seasonal "crop" you harvested instead of a constant upkeep resource
They don't require modern tech to build, however the actual concept of the hives described here were only invented recently.
not because the concept is somehow magically at this end of the tech tree
I mean... we have teleportation and mechanical beings, a wooden beehive isn't much of a stretch imo
ofc, but I still don't want them in the base game as they would make honey production too easy and cheap and also because it doesn't fit the technological theme.
nevermind the fact that the serapth SOMEHOW knows literally everything. they know everything from metallurgy, smithing and mechanics to animal husbandry, farming and pottery
Just add a way to further balance them out? Like you have to tend to them or they will become infested by wasps or somethin
I'm not saying it is impossible, but even if we accept that, I don't like how it would affect gameplay.
I see what ya mean
you can easily have hive boxes without any problems because literally the only problem you have with them is whether you know you can farm bees that way, and the seraph would know
That's why I think it should be reserved for mods.
and I behemently disagree with you, so we're back at neutral
If you got a skill issue with the gameplay just say it XD
skeps are extremely basic and bees are something that deserves something greater imo
what are you on about? the skeps are stupidly simple with zero progression after you've done it once. way too simple and lacking depth
Maybe the wooden hives can wear out- like the bellows or maybe have bears attracted to hives? And the bears can climb or destroy fences to get to them
Or make bees more dangerous, requiring more specialized equipment like suits?
the harvesting process would be more labor intensive, as you would have to use a smoker to collect the frames from the boxes and then having to centrifuge the frames to get the honey out
Yes
I was about to say a good way to balance things is to make it more of a task than it is a quick pit stop
and there is significant investment resource wise when it comes to building the hives and the frames
skeps are literal stone age technology. it would be fitting that when you advance to iron age and to steel that you would be able to upgrade the hives and actually build up the bee infastructure
In reality, bee colony’s do very well with little input by the bee keeper, what should be the balancing difficulty is the construction, harvesting, and over wintering.
Maybe there’s a cumulative growth through the colony’s lifetime.
For the over wintering challenge, maybe in the spring they don’t just start back up from where they left off. They’re behind, need to forge more, and maybe the colony dies, so you have to go out and hunt another colony.
you could easily have part of the challenge to know when to leave enough honey behind so you don't kill the hive by stealing their winter stores
and to start the production up properly in spring you have to provide the hive with honey so they get an energy boost to get started
Yes
which is pretty much what real beekeepers do
Or ya just leave em “bee” and they take longer to produce honey lol
yeap
I usually play on 30 day months so im used to a good wait
Same here I love how VS simulates reality
I play on vanilla months. it's not even year 2 yet and I'm like 50 hours in. Can't imagine having to play with 30 month days lol
yeah but then it's winter for 100 hours at a time
Ye
and everything sucks
we should be able to domesticate the bees potentially
also they should be able to buff nearby crops and receive benefits depending on what crops are nearby (not stackable)
both of these are a yes
i assume bees would understand the dynamic keeper and hive dynamic in a few generations
but logs, boxes and pots should all be possible to be turned into hives
yeah true
it's not like bees are really "domesticated" in modern day anyways, most people consider them only partially domesticated despite it being thousands of years
i would like to see a hive in game that is similar to that in real life, where you can take out the honeycomb panels to extract the honey
after a while a hive just learns to stop recognizing the keeper as a significant threat and mellow down and that turns into a learned behaviour since bees aint live that long
yeah theyre kinda symbiotic rather than domestic
but yeah pot hives and smoking techniques were apparently around in 2450 BCE in egypt
like keepers managed hundreds of hives at that point presumably without very sophisticated keeping gear
they probably had something idk
1850s is around where the removable frame hive was made
so that is unlikely
but i assume there's some similar alternative that is more time accurate
if not that's a pretty small mod to be added if they updated the beekeeping mechanics and made several hives part of the base game
atleast i'd assume as much
the thing with langstroth hives is that even though they were only invented in 1800's, the technology itself is something you only need woodworking as a prerequisite
it's an extreme outlier in regards to technologies humanity have discovered that it's something that should have been invented thousands of years ago, not in the past 200
the structure is simpler than a wooden chest
id be fine with it being added for qol sake but i doubt it will be, honestly
I think it would be a pretty necessary addition, we need better bees. the current skep system is kind of basic and there is no way to upgrade to anything better
I dislike the "it's not time accurate" argument as the world already has alternate history. you could just argue that this world invented hive boxes earlier because some carpenter's son hyperfixated on bees and discovered the bee space
also, there are broken teleporters in nearly every cave and there are alchemical robots running around. the seraph also somehow knows every technology from basket waving to pottery and metallurgy, so they would also know of the superior beehives.
expanded beekeeping does it best <3
