#Make Brass Torch Holders Cheaper

TL;DR: Cut the price of brass torch holders down to 1 plate of brass instead of 2, require use of a hammer and chisel in the new recipe for them.

I like that making torch holders is restricted to the point where you can do proper metalworking. Having (good) permanent light sources is a big deal. I also really like how you're incentivized to explore in order to find aged torch holders you can re-use in your own builds; personally, I think they're rare enough that you can't get permanent light immediately, but common enough that it's a reasonable incentive to have you doing cave diving early on, when you're poorly equipped to handle it.

That said...torch holders are pretty expensive. 4 ingots of brass -- and the labor of hammering brass into plates, if you don't have a helve hammer yet -- for 1 permanently lit torch is a pretty steep price in the early game. Compare the cost of metal to that of lanterns. Said lanterns are limited in their production by beekeeping and mining for clear quartz, but they only require 1 metal plate. They also have the benefit of being easy to relocate, usable as an in-hand lightsource, and stronger than torch holders. So, in practice, you'll just use torches without holders in the very early game and use the aged torch holders you find while exploring until you can graduate to lanterns, which will then become your main light sources.

All in all, I feel like crafted torch holders are too expensive for the part of the game you'd ideally be using them in, which is before you've got beehives set up but after you've entered the copper age. I'd cut their price in half to 1 brass plate, and add a hammer and a chisel into the crafting table recipe for them, which you'd presumably need so you can shape the plate into a holder. (Obviously not consuming the hammer or chisel in the craft, just using up some durability on both.)

Alternatively, give torch holders a unique, brass-exclusive smithing recipe on an anvil that only requires 2 bars of brass - something like hammering out your ingots into a cross shape while the metal is hot, which your seraphim then bends into the form of the torch holder off of the anvil. Metal origami and all that.

Hard agree - the two plate requirement makes these very underutilized
They're too expensive to justify not simply waiting for a candle to make a lantern

Related to your comment, I'm reminded that panning for bony soil lets you bypass beekeeping in terms of getting candles (and panning bony soil in the early game is something I find myself doing at night anyhow). So knocking down the price feels like it'd just make sense. Also, given the size of the plates, surely you don't need more than one to make a torch holder - the holders aren't THAT big.

hm, perhaps you are right.

making a torch holder from 2 brass plates (4 brass ingots) seems awfully expensive. able to craft it from single plate but needs a hammer and chisel would make it up.

Probably because candles are harder to come by than torches. Though i don't disagree with you.

In that case, instead of an anvil recipe that takes 2 ingots, probably just the one ingot shaped similar to the chute

1 ingot would be even better, yeah
that way it feels more consistent to the progression

I don't think I've made a single torch holder in my world with 300+ hours ngl. It's just not worth it with the current cost

i think the only time most people make one is because they specifically like how it looks (very valid) or they dont know lanterns exist

true, i also do that. but its probably cheaper/easier just to keep them in a chest...

the convenience is nice though

For example ores on crate looks great

#

Crates are lowkey so good, cheap to make, holds so much

#

They are better than chests in one item storage

steel mountain
#

ah is that how crates work? i was always too lazy to find out

humble mulch
#

Holds only one item

#

But holds 20 stacks of it

steel mountain
#

ah, thats how they work. that sounds really useful for ores and stones

humble mulch
#

Its great for stuff like dirt, stone, ore and coal

#

Once filled a crate with bountiful ore chunks

#

That was like 640 ingots worth of material
