I’m conducting a survey for a university project presentation about toki pona. I’m trying to make some statistics and accurately portray our community and conlang for outsiders. My point is to also promote toki pona in a universitary context. Any filled form helps, and it only takes a few minutes. Please help me with this 🙏🏻

# vague violet I’m conducting a survey for a university project presentation about toki pona. I...

I filled this out and have two minor issues:
On the question where you asked how many scripts someone knew, making each section specifically for a specific set of scripts being known restricts the possible amount of proper answers from being provided.
The question asking if one answered yes to the previous question about knowing other conlangs is a required question, when it really shouldn’t be for the usability of the test

the "How long did it take you to learn toki pona to the point of being able to use it coherently?" has a weird set of options ("over 1 month", "1 year" and "still learning") and i also can't answer it because i do not remember how long it took me at all

vale imp
#

also i have no idea what that question is actually asking

#

there are simple topics and more complicated ones

#

i feel like this sort of data has already been collected somewhrrr

vale imp
#

i guess "still learning" applies to everyone but together with the other options it kinda implies you're only allowed to be still learning during your first year

#

there's definitely at least some overlap with linku's yeah

void basin
#

and jan Niwe's

vale imp
#

ah hm i thought linku had more questions than just relating to words, but i guess i mixed it up with some other survey

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I added an “I don't remember” option for the time spent learning and I should also add an “over one year” one. What you consider comprehensible toki pona is subjective, but “still learning” refers to not yet being able to recognize the main words and common nimisin, as well as to express your thoughts somewhat freely

I hope I made things a bit clearer now

vale imp
#

yeah i guess

Also, thanks again! This is of great help! 🥹

#

i still don't feel confident answering that

the wording needs minor fixing

Fluency in toki pona is difficult to define. We don’t have that fancy A1-C2 distinction. And even so, some consider B2 to be fluent, while some say it’s C2.

quasi sigil
#

well then maybe change fluent to coherent instead

vague violet
#

If more people encounter difficulties with that question, I think I can safely mention in my presentation that toki ponists have a hard time deciding at which point one is fluent

vale imp
#

it's just more useful to ask more specific questions about abilities
and to allow them to go unanswered

vague violet
#

The point of the question is to put into light how long it takes to learn a language so small, but that seems hard to answer on its own. I will simply clarify some things verbally, stating the ambiguity.

Now that I think about it, I myself can understand spoken and written toki pona and write messages, but I have no idea if anyone could understand me orally. And that’s because, like the survey also shows, most of us don’t have real-life partners to talk to

vale imp
#

speaking is relatively easy tbf

#

and there are voice chats

#

but yeah

vague violet
#

20 hours a day for 30 days seems the most realistic one. It’s similar to what I did two years ago.

#

Also, I will use this source for the project

a! Sorry! I’ll blame the hour (23:32) and the long day at uni 😅

#

I meant minutes, for sure

slow wolf
#

ehe ye i totally getcha :p

#

was just funny seeing you say that 20 hours a day for 30 days is the most realistic

quasi sigil
#

I mean 4 hours of sleep isn’t that bad

#

as long as you put in a water and food break for one hour every three days you can easily maximize time spent learning

#

that’s

#

20*30-10=590

#

590 hours of learning is very reasonable

vague violet
#

That’s sounds like our professors explaining how studying an average of 10 hours a day during the first semester is reasonable. (I wish I were joking.)
