the big deal with offtopic discussion has always been that it can clash between people that want to talk ontopic (what we say the space is for) vs offtopic (what we are using the space for)

i remember when ma ante was announced, i was specifically wondering why the mods/admins at the time didn't try pushing that section into the toki pona taso section
idk exactly what that would look like and obv it's been a long time so you couldnt' really architect that anymore
but the reason why it probably would not work is that lot of people there just weren't here for toki pona
they had a passing interest in it at one point, or were a little invested, but mostly this was just another community server to them with cool people they liked to hang out with
you couldn't convert it to a toki pona section bc nobody actually there wanted that
so they would've just left

my personal experience is that I don't super mind off topic dicussions being prominent. because like, people on this server all speak toki pona and care about it

so like. if i feel like talking about or in toki pona, i can initiate it here and people will respond

maybe 6 months ago i was thinking about this space and its relationship to learners and intermediate speakers, and thinking we needed better support for learners, so i proposed a new category which would pick up pana sona and have a few other channels to that end, and it would serve the dual purpose of guiding newbies to the server (which got eaten by the addition of onboarding) and newbies to the language (great!)

mind you, kama sona already existed; i was responding to two things: there are still newbies here, and in kama sona those newbies aren't beside advanced speakers except when those advanced speakers are teaching i.e. speaking english to explain toki pona, not speaking toki pona!

anyway, the general response to that proposal was that this space should cater to advanced speakers and conversely should not cater to newbies, which is a reasonable and fantastic goal in theory

but back then and right now, ma pona doesn't do either. the server has spaces for newbies and spaces for advanced speakers, but the newbies leave for kama sona and stop interacting here and loosen their access to immersion, and the advanced speakers don't get the interaction they're looking for: ona li wile toki pona. the spaces that could be for advanced speakers are occupied by newbies (which is not necessarily bad!) or by others speaking english (which means it is not a space for advanced speakers).

so like, sometimes this space is good for advanced speakers. sometimes it is good for newbies. a lot of the time, it's just another community server, and people here speak toki pona sometimes if they wanna.

tl;dr: ma pona is not good for learners or advanced speakers. what IS it good at? what SHOULD IT be good at? and what should we do to influence that change, if we choose to change this space?

i stared at it for several minutes when you sent it and was like "this can't be literal. it does not make sense to be literal, it's a complete non-sequitur right"
so i reasoned about it for a bit
and decided it was an implied metaphor in response to the previous discussion about the esperanto server:
where can you go that is not a beach that has playable sand?
a sandbox, on a playground, a safe and small and easily accessed place to play
the metaphor being, the beach (ma pona pi toki pona taso) is big and difficult
and the sandbox (a more accessible space like we have now maybe) is easy and good

my general vibe on this is that we couldn't enforce it very well
but it's not a bad idea
we could get at it by policing off topic a little more heavily for a while, until non-mods are nudging people that way on their own! something something establish culture

i think the real trouble is that we don't really have off topic channels other than if you want to speak toki pona, and #musi
so for a lot of topics, we either make a channel for them (which is a whoooole other discussion) or tell them to talk off server?
this is my off the cuff thinking anyway
