the point is: while the manga has its flaws? There are some pieces that go really hard. I am all for kel and basil's potential in terms of friendship (or more) so some scenes in the manga have me bawling like realizing kel is the one who saved basil in the lake. but overall? Kel is amazingly written. Period.

He's That One so very supportive friend who just gives love, even if he's not getting as much as he would like in return. He shows acceptance, he cares, he welcomes (back?) and even if you see him in conflict with Aubrey? He still is the one who says he wants to reach for her.
10/10 best character and the manga does him justice at least

in that page I linked? i love how Kel takes the serious route to remind basil he still cares, I love the shock in Basil's face nd the nervous smile accompanied by that 'okay' that almost hints a genuine disbelief like he's telling himself 'if you only knew' and telling himself it's not really true.

Sucks they didn’t show OMORI watering Basil’s plants though throughout headspace because I feel like that was important to understanding Sunny’s care for Basil. Cut scene won’t feel as rewarding because it doesn’t feel like Basil and Sunny are that close and their relationship isnt emphasized enough, at least to me. Maybe some flashbacks to Aubrey’s bullying?

i feel like its partially selection bias (the majority of manga artists are young so when one of them dies it’s almost always from unnatural causes) and partially because the specific type of person who would go into manga as a career in the first place would usually have mental health issues already

im not well informed on many deaths when it comes to mangaka, but most of the time their deaths are related to overworking themselves. other than that, lemon's last take has some legitimacy to it. but its not necessarily that they start OFF with mental illness, more that when people become popular for their work, expectations grow and they can develop serious mental illness due to it. that doesn't always insinuate why or how they die though

it can also cause physical issues depending on postures, how long they sit down to work, etc. there are many ways they can develop poor health

There are a variety of reasons. Being a manga artist is a sedentary job, which is not ideal for your health. There are also issues with overwork and mental illness (especially since this is Japan).
Also, OMORI is a monthly magazine, so I think it's okay, but popular manga artists who update their weekly serializations are said to only get around three hours of sleep a night.
