if they’d been this level of quality from the start then there’d be a whole lot less hate on the manga in general, but because the first few were so horrible it was a bad first impression and set a bad precedent

I definitely think this part is a translation error (and if no one on Manga Channel has pointed this out, I'd like to correct it).
Hero's mother's line in this scene is:

Original Japanese text: 「4年ぶりにやっと帰ってきたのに家族と過ごさないの…？」

There's not a single word about college in this sentence, and compared to the English version, another difference is that the word "family" is used instead of "mom."

The one who put sunny on a pedestal so high the other had only one way to go and it was down.
