I think people just have a ridiculously high standard about what constitutes "a game about depression"

When I would argue depression is rarely in its extreme state and exploring it in other more moderate context is just as valuable

Themes of depression in deltarune are mostly just a consequence of the feeling of powerlessness, boredom and the lack of freedom that most of the characters have.

I dont know if you've played Persona 4, but if you did, would you say its a game about depression ?

Those who use this meme talk about it as if it were the main theme the developers had in mind when creating it. When it's often a theme that comes as a consequence of other, more important themes in these games.

Deltarune is in a lot of way about existentialism: what's the point? What's fate? Do our choices matter?
And in that aspect it also has to be about both existential dread and existential hope. All characters on some level or another suffer from depression exactly because all of them suffer from the cosequences of existential dread. As such I believe depression is so fundemental in Deltarune that I can say it is as much about depression as it is about choice

Deltarune is as much about "freedom" as much as it is about the depression caused by "freedom". Because what is freedom itself is uncertain but the human dread from it is what is explorable and what matters

This is my justification. And I think it is valid. I can make the opposite justification for why Omori is not about depression either

Omori is about guilt and self-forgiveness, depression is nothing in Omori than a consequence of the conflict between man, guilt, and the inability to self-forgiveness

And as I said, I think exploration of more moderate forms of depression doesn't remove from the depression

In Deltarune most characters are like Aubrey, Hero, and Kel. Their depression is more realisticslly hidden. Omori just has the luxury of exploring far more exaggerated form of depression with Sunny and Basil and so it becomes "about depression"

But considering that the entire main cast and half the side cast of Deltarune is depressed

I do not see how you can say it is not about "depression" besides having a ridiculously high standard about what a story about depression is

But if you show someone Deltarune and say “this is a game about depression”. Even if true, they're going to get a very incomplete picture of the game's real themes.

I think the most important part to realise is that no story is technically about depression because depression is the human expression of other things, what would ultimately be the actual main themes.

So for me a story is about depression when it uses depression as its main vehicle of conflict and consequence of the interaction between the major theme and the human condition. You can tackle theme like existentialism without depression (like Outer Wilds does)

me personally, it just takes some adjusting
the pacing feels a bit too fast at times, and it's strange that headspace is chopped up into snippets as sunny explores faraway with his friends, but the story is still there, even if it's a bit too revealing at times
the art is beautiful, i appreciate the work the artist put into it too
the story just feels hard to adjust to yk?
but after all, it is an adaptation, it's never going to stay true to the original source

basically: it feels quite different to omori the game, but if you adjust to it i don't think it's that bad tbh
