Kinda irrevelant to Kel's situation, but if Omocat is in fact giving Nui all the lore she's been keeping unexplained (or even completely obscure) from us since the game's release, then that would lead me to believe that at least the lore of the manga is canon to the game.

Personally, I had a not very pleasant thought since the first chapter - what if all these strange metamorphoses of characters (active Sunny, Aubrey with that thing from the video, Angsty Kel, etc.) or some weird moments is how she sees her characters now? Like, what if over the years she has slightly revised her vision of the story and characters, so now this is how Omori looks in her head?

He has very little screentime for being such an important character, a lot of things are never explained about him, him getting the idea to hang Mari, and actually going through with it, is not something you can just not actually explain, and his character doesnt really have a good conclusion at all.

For game Aubrey, my main problem is that the game is WAY too scared to show her doing bad things. So instead it just look she is midly annoyed at Basil and avoid him while Basil keep seeing her and start crying for no fucking reason every time.

Like yeah, Manga Aubrey is way more compelling as a character, she actually does bad things, she actually says mean things, it show us how full of anger she is, instead of just telling us.

I have a whole essay written all the way up about that. I think it's just VERy hard to telln where his obsessions start and why, but there's a pretty deep case for abandonment issues tied to his family situation (grandma is dying and his parents still don't come back, they just hire someone), and rejection sensitive dysphoria

The obsession with sunny, which i don't like too much if it carries post truth, can be ties with a few things. 1) sunny was safe and listened, something he probbaly didn't have/couldn't have because he couldn't worry grandma

2. he may have some kind of heavy delusons and the fear of losing his friends got him to 'protect' sunny, with his isolation feeding into delusions over delusions where both he and sunny are victims of a monster no one knows about so they SHOULD stick together, right?

3. He seems to have hold into the idea of 'when sunny comes out, we'll fix things' something that didn't happen unti three days left and then his world breaks. sunny is leaving. Sunny even abandons him in the bathroom. Everything crashes.

He's surprisingly good at putting up a front, considering no one really seemed to know he had issues beside Sunny when they were kids, and the only reason we see the mask slip and how traumatized Basil is- it's because we meet him as everything is falling apart around him. His grandma is dying, Sunny is leaving for good (and, from his point of view, leaving him with a monster), Aubrey has been actively hostile toward him. he loses his flower pin after falling into a lake (a present from grandma)- everything is horrible and he snaps. But what people forget is that he kept it together for years, fighting a battle in silence, without telling anyone about anything and doing his best to protect Sunny, at least from his point of view. Even the 'ending' is an attempts of Basil to protect. He'll do all in his power to help those he cares about... hiding as much as possible his own pain.

I personally had a problem with her throwing out the photo album but then almost drowning Basil in a lake for crossing out the pictures... like, that really seems hypocritical. And no, Aubrey said that the album was their memories (just like Basil) that were important to all of them and that she was protecting it from them (so she meant that those pictures were more to her than just the faces of people who weren't there for her), but then throws it out that same day herself... and then gets mad at Basil again for destroying it. She has to be either as in denial as Sunny or just stupid. And manga just makes it worse...

I'm NOT saying it's healthy and I think he and sunny need to step away for a good amount of time from each other and heal before spending time toogether again but I still think Basil really, REALLY tried his best and did what he could do.

sadly, omocat kind of.......... she goes REALY deep into Sunny's mind. but everyone else is kind of glossed over, with BAsil being the worst offender in that sense. He doesn't even get to reconcile with Aubrey! she apologizes, but no. he doesn't answer. From his prospective, he's still not friends with her again and that was in the worst possible night

there's just so much left to unpack with him but 'hey in the secret ending sunny (who canonically doesn't like smiling) and Basil (who should have so much going on and be horrified at the fact he took sunny's eye) smile! So ALL IS GOOD

He chose to protect Sunny by desecrating Mari's body and hurting everyone else. This just ruins the image the game has built of him in relation to the group of friends. He showed that he doesn't really care this much about his friends' feelings and that Sunny is more important to him, and the reasons for his obsession with them are not given at all (and speculation is not considered canon), while the game tries to make you think otherwise through cute moments. The root of his motivation and everything he did is his attachment for Sunny, which REQUIRES further explanation, because it is beyond the realm of best friends. Even the fact that Basil had some insecurities still seems far-fetched against the backdrop of how he treated Mari's body and other's feelings about her death without even thinking. And he shows zero remorse for it, all his guilt is about how he caused problems to Sunny, there's zero word of guilt about what he did to others.
Maybe he was sorry, but then why Omocat decided not to show it? Like... completely?

Kel is arguably one of the last headspace characters who seems to completely let go of basil, even if the flower crown kick seems to suggest otherwise (I can elaborate but i need to go back to the game and take screenshots. he seems to fight the most not to forget)

Kel is also very physical when it comes to love language, which is something possibly basil rarely experienced but enjoyed. Kel is a 'giver' in that sense and basil seems... not too uncomfortable when kel is close?

in the real world we see kel stepping in almost immediately to protect basil, too, and while it's true he'd do the same with sunny (you cannot have suny get hit in RW unless kel is down) it's.... weird to think he's just go in guns blazing for anyone right?

he ressures basil, he plays dumb with basil a bit, he's just supportive for the little we see. And in the manga it's even more explicit

chapter 2 has this bit that's VERy lovely. No hesitations, no doubts, just 'you can count on us' and 'we're still friends'

We don't know WHY kel and basil had limited interactions inthe past 4 years but it's safe to assume the year of hero being sick had kel focused only on his brother, mostly at least. And then when he tried to reapproach aubrey we know she reacted poorly and aggressively, so maybe kel was also a bit afraid on approaching basil too?

I think that with the 'loneliness' comment from two different people, we're given a glimpse on the fact that depsite being very friendly, most of kel's current bonds are on a superficial level compared to his old friend group so i'm positive he missed sunny, basil and their old bond (with aubrey it's more complex)

even if Basil is TECHNICALLY a good masker and even if he had to rush away, he's still focusing on both sunny ANd basil's well being, too

What we get is that no matter how strained teir relationship currently is, he still cares just so much

Not to mention I think basil and kel would be a wonderful foil for each other in the 'you don't have to pretend everything is okay' department just to have the other be like 'look who's taking'

You can criticize the manga, but I really think most of the complaint about it come from the fact that, as an adaptation, it has to, well, adapt the story so it can fits in a manga format.

My main problem with it is that it doesnt actually do it enough, it just cut or rearrange some scenes. It shouldn't be afraid to add scenes or change some moments so the story flows better.

The manga has brought us all together and I love it.
