to me, it felt more like he was "stressed out", which would fit neatly with how he was feeling on the fight against basil. it seemed to me as if the cause for the incident was that the stress of the recital and everything surrounding it had caught up with sunny, which led to him breaking his own violin, and mari arguing with sunny because of it. i guess if you look at it in some way, sunny pushing mari would be akin to sunny pushing his problems away, which i think would also fit neatly with the concept of headspace, and omori (who's design is based around mari's piano), which is a character who's main purpose is to push sunny's problems away and protect him

if sunny instead pushed mari because he was scared of, say, any potential reprimands, the tone of the game would change heavily, and it seems to me that, were this to be the case, the game would try to put in a bit more effort in portraying mari as a person who appeared to be perfect, but was much more flawed in the inside.
