I find that every time I have any opportunity to connect 2 fields I take it, the same for if I have space to expand already existing fields

Not only can you get the whole field done in one, you also get more crop for the gaps between the fields and head rows when you plow them

The only Time I would advise against combining fields is if you are an animal farmer and you don’t have other smaller fields, as you tend to need multiple crops and grass to sustain them
