I had this error (21) for few weeks.
How I solved it today:
**1. Repair/Reinstall both Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable packages. ** in Windows Settings > Apps
2. After this Sonar finally started
3. I was also missing Sonar Virtual devices so I uninstalled GG
4. Reboot
5. Fresh GG 87.0.0 install
6. Finally working.

I tried to stream with sonar after I finished setting up my mic and I thought it sounded decent.

Only problem was for some reason everyone said that the audio of my game was choppy and they'd only be able to the game when I was speaking... So then I put it on the same track as my mic or something or maybe the stream mix because I was in the middle of a stream and I didn't know how to fix it and so then you know that worked they could hear the game and they could hear me and from me watching over the vaude the audio was fine except now the game was too loud and they couldn't hear me no matter how much I edited the setting in sonar.

So then I put it back to how it was originally and then they told me that it was choppy again and so I gave up and ended my stream and now I've been upset since and I don't know how to fix it. I don't even really know what's wrong.

Your stream mix is set to your main speakers.
Its toggled on under the mic.

You have two options.

1. Change your stream mix on the left.
2. Toggle it off on the right.

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

3. If you are having issues with step 2 or step 3 above, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

If you see the "Sonar did not allow this app to change outputs" error, then step 1 above did not work, and you may need to do step 2 or step 3 to route your audio.

SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in Sonar. Simply click on your devices in the Mixer and open the Device Manager in Sonar.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same Device Manager menu. Simply drag and drop to set the order of devices.

Hello! I am a streamer. I have been using SONAR for a while and I love it. Multiple channels help me with my streaming a lot. However, I recently realized that SONAR is giving out 96KHz output. Now, for some 96KHz might be great. But streaming softwares like OBS and Xsplit only supports upto 48KHz. Which is creating some issues for me. I want SONAR to give 48KHz output. I checked in my audio settings for SONAR and I can only see 96KHz option. Is there a way to switch SONAR output to 48KHz? Thank you.

You need to go into Discord Voice & Video settings. Change your input/output to Sonar - Chat and Sonar - Mic. Then ChatMix will work via Sonar. It doesn't work if you just drag and drop Discord in Sonar

well, if youre setting the output in discord to the arctis 7 mic/sonar mic, keep in mind that streamer mode locks those outputs to 100%, so you'd be testing those outputs at full volume

yeah, my settings in OBS says it's track 2

so I'm not sure how your audio is setup, but you generally want to make sure all the tracks you want to be audible during the LIVE stream are on track 1, and any audio you want to be saved to the VOD are on track 2.

Hello folks, I just reinstalled whole system and downloaded freshly the GG Sonar and got this problem. When I go to device menager I cannot turn on the Aux either Media channel, doesn't show any selected device on the visible channels (I have speaker as "realtek device" and headphones to choose from). I had this issue before after a while of using the program, reinstall helped but now I reinstalled sonar like 3-4 times and still nothing, even tried older version.

its very weird i had that problem too, what you gotta do is go into discord and make sure the settings are to which sonar type you want (you can find this in voice and video). If it still doesnt work, you can go into the gg program and you should be able to see what device its using for audio and what not (image of what it looks like will be connected).

Ive got a problem with the media function. So im listening to apple music, and on some songs it switches it to game and doesnt use media. Surprisingly only certain songs which is weird. Anyone know how to fix it? Ive tried going into sound mixer on windows and change it there but it does nothing and apple music doesnt have anything to change its audio in the app.

I had a device change shortcut set up, to switch between my headphones and speakers;
since around device manager was launched, this option almost ceased to work; volume shortcuts still function properly, but when I try to switch devices, it affirms the change but doesnt actually do it, sound still goes from the device it was up to that point

I have an issue where certain channels like MEDIA don't produce sound at all (while GAME channel works normally). It works only after I go to Windows Sound settings and change anything there and suddenly it works

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

3. If you are having issues with step 2 or step 3 above, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

If you see the "Sonar did not allow this app to change outputs" error, then step 1 above did not work, and you may need to do step 2 or step 3 to route your audio.

Hey all, I have no idea if you guys can help me. I'm using sonar and for some reason the past month the sounds for the stream are so low for the viewers but CRAZY loud for me. Master volume is not a channel it just controlls all the other ones

You select your speakers in your sonar media channel and then i any app select sonar media as your device to get sound

since you're in streamer mode, i think the device manager is hidden. you can check your audio settings under the "master" options

not having audio when sonar is off is probably the bigger issue to solve, since if it's not working in windows then it's not going to work in sonar, since sonar goes through windows audio

and gamedac chat for discord so i can prioritize which sounds to hear better from the gamedac
after i shut down computer and turning it back on.. everytime i have to take out the cable from the gamedac and plugging it back in so it can detect all the sonar outputs which is kind of annoying.

that video shows a different product, so the process is different. the nova headsets all use sonar for 7.1 surround sound on PC, so turn on the spatial audio there.

I am in need of some help.
As you can see in the screenshot - My mic has VM levels that show in Sonar - but do not go out through Master and never go out over stream to my Slobs. Games do - I can control and all other apps (Chrome, Games, Etc) go out through sonar (show VM levels) - ALSO show in "Master" and go out over stream.
Only my Mic will not show VM levels in "Master" only in Mic and never go out over stream. Worked 4 months ago when I streamed last.

Good afternoon, it's been the second day I've been trying to overcome the crackling sound after installing Sonar on my PC. Already tried: reinstall, change the priority of the process Sonar to high through the task manager, as well as through Process Laso, additionally set high priority and all other processes SteelSeries. Unfortunately, at the moment only turning Sonar off and using standard output helps. PC specs: i5 13600kf, DDR4 32GB, GTX 970 temporarily. Perhaps someone has encountered this? I would be very grateful for help.

I did found the problem it was KRISP on DISCORD that made my voice to cut out so fast i made a hige noise or somethink then the mic stoped working for a few sec. Disable that and using it from gg steelseries works great! Was so close to buy a new mic ^^

do you have any general complaints about ur mic? if its too quiet or background noise is too much the ai noise cancellation isnt too bad in sonar and the compressor is actually pretty helpful for maintaining healthy sound ranges. The only reason im switching up on my answer is because i totally forgot aslong as you have sonar open it will hijack your mic input and if the problems you are having with the mic can be resolved in sonar then id recommend trying it first

Ahh thats makes sense i mean u could try adjusting your equalizer to how you like, but i find that overly adjusting can lead to peaks or crackles. The basses would probably be your best bet

you should connect the base station via USB to your PC, and then the headset can connect wirelessly to the base station

it should be already paired to the base station, so all you'd need to do is just turn the headset on. you'd know it's connected when a little headset icon and battery level appear in the top left of the base station's screen

it depends on you if you want to use immersion or clear dialogs for YouTube.

i got a new headset (redragon h858) and the charge percentage has a funny issue when looking at sonar while its wired and wireless

idk if thats an issue with the headphones or sonar detecting the mic as a separate device

but while wireless they detect as full battery while mic is 92%
and wired detects 62% with mic at 92%

I’m experiencing an issue with my Arctis Nova 7X White headset and the Sonar software (version 89.1.0). Every time I reboot my PC, wake it up from sleep, or simply turn off and then turn on the headset, the default audio output device resets back to my speakers instead of retaining the SteelSeries headset I previously selected.

Here are the steps I’ve already tried to resolve the issue:

1. Disabled Windows from automatically switching audio devices (Control Panel → Sound → Communications tab → selected "Do nothing".)
2. Manually set the SteelSeries Sonar as the default device in Windows Sound Settings.
3. Manually selected the correct output in Sonar (everytime).

Despite all these steps, the Sonar software does not retain the output device setting across reboots, sleep/wake cycles, or when powering the headset off and on again. Is it possible to make it so that when the headset is turned on, Sonar automatically selects it?
Could you please advise whether this is a known issue, and if there’s a workaround or fix? Perhaps there has already been information about this somewhere? If so, please send me a link. Thank you!

have you tried pull it drop it in the top of the list? whatever the image shows is the device priority. your speakers are on the top of the list of priority, not your headphones.

you should set your headphones to be the top priority even if its turned off. for that open up the device manager and select show all devices. if your headphones was ever properly connected to your system, it will show up in the list of devices greyed out if not connected at present. just pull and drop it at the top of the list. This should fix it

I'm having a recurring problem with my SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 Wireless headset, and I could use some help resolving it.

When I switch my PC off and on again, the connection between the headset and the dongle seems to cut off automatically. As a result, no sound comes out of the headset. Each time I turn it on, I have to pair it up again manually, which is clearly not normal for a wireless headset.

Here's what I've already tried:

Uninstalling the SteelSeries GG software, then installing an earlier version.

Multiple system and headset reboots.

Checked USB ports and dongle.

I no longer have sonar in my peripherals in the gg application.

Unfortunately, the problem persists. I must point out that I'm connected in 2.4 GHz (via the USB dongle supplied).

Do you have a solution to this problem? Is this a known bug or a possible hardware fault?

I've read reddit posts about disabling and enabling Sonar should fix it, but no luck for me ig. Others have said to try installing a previous firmware to fix it. everytime I wake up the pc from restart ,shutdown one of those profiles disappears and i always have to disconnect the cable and plug it back in so it reads all thee profiles again.

in this screenshot it says you have Sonar - Mic as your input in Discord. When streamer mode is on, the mute buttons in Sonar don't control the Sonar - Mic output, and instead control the Sonar - Stream output, so muting yourself in Sonar won't mute your mic in Discord. You either need to use the mute button in discord, or set discord's input to be Sonar - Stream.

I notice I should've put my message here instead: I have a pair of Astros but a SteelSeries keyboard and mouse so I use SteelSeriesGG to capture moments. I would like to be able to record my friends audio from discord as well and understand I need to use Sonar as my output device. However, Sonar sounds terrible through my headset and I'd rather use my default output. Is there any other way to record Discord audio or do I absolutely have to use Sonar?

I'm not super familiar with Astros, but I'm assuming they also have a chatmix option and it splits chat audio into a different output? If so, you shouldn't need to use Sonar, you can just go into the audio settings in Moments and make sure the outputs are being recorded correctly.

Does it go to sonar's gaming channel? If yes then it's nothing wrong. That's how steelseries sonar works. It's default channel is gaming.

Discord screenshare currently has a bug where it thinks Sonar is part of the Desktop audio, so it does record and repeat your audio to anyone watching.

Your two options are:

1. Just share a specific app in Discord instead of your full screen. When Discord is just capturing an app, it'll be smart enough to only record audio from that one app.
2. Turn on Streamer Mode in Sonar and use that to play your desktop audio, and mute the Discord output. There's steps to do it here: https://support.steelseries.com/hc/en-us/articles/35145998503181-Setup-Sonar-to-Stream-with-Discord-Without-Echo

have you tried the wave link plugin for stream deck? it seems like it might allow for mic monitoring within that plugin (if you can put that to take the audio after the sound deck app has done its effects?)

Thanks for letting me know about the update - I blocked the internet for GG so that it wouldn't update and something wouldn't break again 🙂 The 7.1 false detection error hasn't been fixed yet... I'm using FxSound and it's much better .

For anyone having that static sound issue with the Arctis Nova 5, turn of spatial audio in the windows volume settings. I think it does this because the steel series software has its on spatial audio feature. The issue with these headphones is that they have way tooo many mechanics. The sonar option is aggrivating, the number of equilzers and volume limitters is INSANE AND BEYOND MISLEADING. THe sound is great yall are just doing too much

Microphone Settings in SteelSeries Sonar Not Reflected in Discord or Other Apps

Hello,

I’ve encountered an issue with SteelSeries Sonar and would like your help or insight.

When I configure my microphone settings within SteelSeries Sonar, my voice sounds great – clear and exactly how I want it. However, these settings don't seem to carry over to other applications like Discord or other communication tools. No matter what I try, my voice in those apps doesn't sound like it does inside Sonar.

I’ve tried every method I could think of – changing input devices, tweaking settings in both Sonar and Discord, reinstalling drivers, etc. But nothing has worked. It seems like Sonar’s processing only applies within the software itself and doesn’t route the processed mic audio to other apps.

Is there something I’m missing? Or is there a way to make the processed microphone audio from Sonar the one that is sent to other applications?

I’d appreciate any help or guidance.

It's a recurring problem, sometimes it fixes itself, sometimes I need to force restart it several times before it does what its supposed to. Man I don't know what the hell they are doing with the app but it's horrible.

if anyone has been having issues like this....i noticed a lot of times it would happen when watching videos.....looks like windows audio service would crash. I noticed in the sound section in device manager. There was a NVIDIA device (not the WDM) one. That if you right click on properties and rollback the driver it should then be listed as High Definition Audio Device. This so far seems to resolve the issue. 🤞

Just dropping some praise -> I submitted feedback on the redesign a while ago that made my life more difficult, and these folks eventually restored functionality!

(The functionality lost was being able to set a percentage on a given audio device from the main mixer screen -> thank you for putting it back!)

Also for anyone with mixer bugs... ensure the steel series audio channel you're trying to output (either in sound settings or in-app (whatever app's) sound output settings) is selected

What’s the best way to record an audio file with my Alias Pro XLR through Sonar? I’m using the Broadcast Low Pitch EQ because I think it sounds good (but open to recommendations).

I just need an audio file recorded so that I can sync it to my camera footage.

A few things with sonar; it keeps dropping devices randomly, telling me i cant move an app to another output as it was set by the app (it wasnt), app is displayed under game and there is no sound at all.

Even then when the app is present under the correct output, i get no sound or it doesnt detect the app and i get no sound...
