Is there any way to use Arctis Nova 5X without using sonar? It keeps disconnecting my headset everytime i shut down my pc or go in sleep mode. I have to unplug the cable and plug it back in for it to work and also some channels sometimes don't work. Pick gaming for your general system sounds. Then through Sonar you can route things like Discord, Spotify, your browser, etc to play through the different channels based on what EQ you want for music, YouTube, Discord calls, etc.

Does anybody find the backup device switching reliable? When I start my PC it always defaults to the monitors first no matter how often i set the priority list it just resets it so I have to manually switch it every time. Ok so I worked around this by reprogramming my keyboard to have f22, f23 and f24 keys when on a different keyboard layer (I have a moonlander mk1 keyboard so there's layers built in) then I created an autohotkey script that repeats the key input to emulate how windows does sound up / down and finally I made sonar listen to those keys for volume up / down / mute

I assume this is pretty much the only way of doing this

ultimately it's basically a 1:1 recreation of how native windows sound controls were working on my computer so it's not that bad

Okay, I need help.

Every time I start my computer it defaults to the (Gaming) output. I have disabled everything except the base output every night for the last week but every time I turn my computer on it defaults to the (Gaming) output and changes my preferences. how do i stop this. it happened when steelseries updated.

It also changes my settings every time I launch a game and routes 1. Sounds from my chat client to my microphone 2. My microphone off, meaning when I clip, it saves incoming chatter from Discord to my microphone and ignores everything I say, rendering my clips USELESS.

It also means when my friends laugh i get a reaction clip.
No matter how many times I set my channels to the correct place, it doesn't save it. Where is the option to add a default setting?!

It should work. Just set Sonar Game to the default Windows output, then select the soundcard as the output for whatever channels you want inside the Sonar app. Then everything running through it will be able to use the Sonar EQs and audio features

Well yeah but if you don't have anything routed through the sondcard it wouldn't show up as a seperate input/output device. If you're just using USB audio devices and not routing anything through the soundcard then the card isn't doing anything

Depending on the card you're getting. If it supports USB audio devices then yeah, just plug them into the card directly, have the card plugged into the computer, then in Sonar, the card should show up as an output option

i'm not familiar with that app, but if you aren't using sonar, you can just do whatever you were doing before. if you are using sonar, keep in mind that sonar has it's own similar function (smart volume) so you may just be able to use that instead

also remember to keep the "gain" on low so that keeps the overall volume lower to save your hearing

How do I stop the change of default audio output device upon launch? Do you know if there is a way to not have it default to "gaming"? I use DTS Sound Unbound for my headphones and it actually causes my DTS to be disabled for my headphones main output device and also I have zero reason to use "SteelSeries Sonar - Gaming". I use sonar for two people (both wearing headphones), to be able to hear each other when playing a game on the same setup. I use the noise suppression only for the mic and then listen to it live in windows. Am I missing something?

I start my pc. It defaults to gaming output device, it actually disables my dts from my headphones output which is not the gaming output. 1-so i have to open the sound panel in windows to change the default output as "gaming" does not support the dts virtual 7.1 option in the dts app, 2- and then i have to open up the dts sound unbound app to reenable it, every start. yikes. I think I might have to pass on this and go back to nvidia broadcast which I was trying to avoid the gpu cost. It really works here other than its force changing my audio output device.

Hi all. So this is the third GameDAC I’ve purchased. The first 2 I got were faulty and sent them back. However, with those I had to do a critical update in the engine tab. But for this third one that I’ve got… I don’t see any critical update. On top of that, I’m getting audio crackles and pops every 10 seconds and it’s super annoying. Can anyone help a brother out?. Just to add, I’m using the SteelSeries GameDac GEN2 and I have plugged IEMs into the GameDac.

Some extra info, I don’t game on my pc I just use it for some work related stuff, music and some Netflix. Without Sonar, I don’t get any crackling or pops. But as soon as I start it up, after 10-20 seconds the crackles start to begin and they appear on a frequent basis

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

setting the windows default to sonar gaming is actually to prevent issues with audio routing. if sonar didn't set one of it's outputs as default, then pretty much any app on your device would just bypass sonar unless you went in and manually routed every single one.

plus there are plenty of games/apps that just don't have audio options, so imagine having to open a game, then alt+tab out to GG, and set it there, then alt+tab in.

It is an issue if we are not needing that part of the program. It is voiced by tons of people and has been listed in the feature request for a while. I get if we are using the functions for playback devices it makes sense because it's probably the only way for those to work but for microphone only users it's not acceptable and completely silly to not give an option in the menu. Looks like it's been mentioned for months so pretty good sign it's not going to change. I'm in servers for other programs and a developer could be reached same day, one developer, and it's implemented in a few weeks time if not same day. Is there an official server or way to get attention to dev's beyond the feature request as it is not meeting the mark, or an official response form them? Thank you in advance. Meaning to come off productive not grumpy or overly direct... Factual.

You very welcome to make suggestions but you're not entitled to dictate how SteelSeries chooses to add features or changing them.

it should be after installation to default users to the game output, i agree with that, i think an option that can be toggled after that first run (to not force game to be default output), should be offered is all i suggest, well, with a caution statement of maybe not getting audio or effects are not working if used, please return setting to original state if issues persist. Can't change th3t for sonse, but I can with other headsets and the problem is gone with 48kHz.

Sonar will always automatically set your Windows output to Sonar Game on every boot if you have Sonar enabled in GG. There's no workaround for that unfortunately. It also won't play audio through any of the other channels like Chat or Media unless you specifically have your headphones/speakers set to those channels and have apps routed to play audio through them. Device fallback only effects what devices get set in each of the Sonar channels based on the order they're detected by the PC. It doesn't effect Sonar from setting the Game channel as the default output source for in Windows

Just disable backup device switch. I fought with this CONSTANTLY because Steelseries GG, in all their wisdom, treats a disconnected monitor that is reconnected as a new device, and forgets the previous settings. So if you do a lot of device switching, or have multiple monitors that also has a speaker, that you switch between, backup device switch is just completely broken.

Engine is used to modify device settings. Generally, any changes made in Engine are saved to the device itself, and can be carried over to other devices such as consoles. It's recommended to check the SteelSeries support pages for more information on what is saved on-board for your particular product.

Sonar is used to enhance your audio on the PC that is currently running it. Changes in Sonar only apply to the machine it's running on and cannot be saved to the headset.

Also got this issue with an Arctis 7 (older headset). Fresh Windows 11 installation. Sound is stuttering, cracking and sometimes disappear completely for a couple of seconds when using Sonar. I've tried most stuff that I found on internet without any improvements. Like forcing the sonar.exe to high priority, changing the default format to 2 channel, 16 bit, 44.1kHZ and so on.

It turns out that my Alienware Command Center (AWCC) is actually eating up my CPU and caused it to be unstable, which then affected my headset's connectivity (I guess it is because Sonar uses CPU too, unstable CPU usage caused it to have unstable performance? I really don't know the logit behind it). So I fixed my CPU issue by using the installation guide provided by AWCC, literally just pressed "Fix install" and bang, my AWCC went back to normal and stopped eating my CPU usage by sending errors to WMI Provider Host, thus my sound loss and stutter issue with Sonar was fixed. :/

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.

SteelSeries Sonar has “Device Fallback” that will automatically switch the outputs on Sonar.

Fallback can be triggered when a device is unavailable (such as when booting your PC or unplugging a device), or it can switch outputs if it detects if a Nova headset is turned off, and automatically switch to speakers.

This fallback functionality can be adjusted or turned off by going into the settings in GG. You can find it under Settings > Sonar > Backup Device Switch.

You can also adjust the order in which devices fall back to. This can be adjusted in the same options menu. Simply scroll down to see the full list of devices.

With these the volume by default in discord is whisper low and by moving chat mix in sonar makes the game sound too low. its not a good balance. might not be anything i can do.

Hey guys, I have been using GG for a very long time now and I haven't had any issues up unitl now. Firstly, sonar now ruins my playback and recording sessions because it makes the audio delayed and choppy. I don't know if there's been an update or something recently but it started happening a few days ago. Secondly, mic section in the mixer doesn't show any mic input even though I get feedback when i use the test feature. Finally, clearclast now makes my mic produce a high pitched humming sound whenever i speak. I haven't changed anything in my setup, I haven't changed any settings in the app, I just woke up one day and all of these things started happening. I don't know if this is the right place for this message but I really like using sonar, I use it every single day and would like a solution to this problem ASAP.

In my setup, I use the SteelSeries Alias microphone but at times I'd rather use the microphone on my headset. Yet it seems like lately when I mute the Alias, it mutes the entire "Mic" channel in Sonar EVEN if I have a different microphone selected for the channel under it's device selection. "Game" being the catch all is partially an artifact of old chatmix design where there was only Game and Chat and nothing else. Once they added Media/Aux there was people asking to allow those to be default.

I think the other part is that older games don't allow for changing the audio output, and they don't play well with tabbing out to change them in Windows, so having Game as default would help with those cases.

I don't stream per se but this seems like it would be fixable by enabling streaming mode in Sonar (see that option in the upper right in your screenshot?) and then having the streaming software capture the sonar's stream output.

Basically the primary Sonar screen, in the upper right there is an option to enable streamer mode which in return will enable independent stream controls per channel and create a dedicated streamer output.

I think "stream" or "streamer" are sometimes overused... so scrub the traditional idea of "streaming" for the context for the purpose of this. You just want to use the "stream" for your clipping software.

I haven't done this personally, so bear with me, but at least from what I understand what you want to accomplish should be possible by enabling "Streamer mode" within Sonar. Then configure your output devices (and mic input device) under "Master" in this instance. "Personal Mix" being the device YOU want to listen to and the "Stream Mix" being where you want the streaming mix.

You should be able to set the "Steam Mix" to a Sonar's stream output -- "SteelSeries Sonar - Stream" and then select that output in your clipping software. Note, that output is not available unless streamer mode is enabled in Sonar.

From there you can control what goes to your personal mix and stream mix (clipping software) for each channel (Game, Chat, Media, Aux, Mic) by using the volume levers in each channel - the headphones indicating your personal mix and the stream icon indicating what's going to the stream mix (or in your case your clipping software).

Just trying to help, but I think this will get you to where you want to be; apologies if I'm completely misunderstanding your scenario.

Looks like you need to route your Fortnite audio is unassigned and should be routed to the Game channel... you can likely fix by just changing the audio output device within Fortnite to the appropriate channel.

I've been having this issue with my headset since I got it, and honestly I'm done with Steelseries now. It was nearly a $300 headset, and admittedly the headset itself is good, but it's rendered literally useless by Sonar/GG.

For the last few years it's been probably a couple times a week that it just decides by itself to randomly assign my audio devices, breaking all of the chat/gaming assignments and making my work calls not route properly through my headset. After a while I learned to just curse it and reboot my PC, forget trying to troubleshoot it.

But now, despite everything being set properly, reinstalling, trying everything else I can think of, I have no audio on headset nor speakers. Anyone know of a decent brand that actually supports their products, ideally that work without redundant software that renders it all useless anyway?

Hello..... I am using a Artic Nova Pro Wireless on a PC with Steelseries GG and Sonar. Recently in Halo Infinite my game chat no longer works and I am forced to join a party on gamebar (I am on PC). My settings have not changed and I used to be fine with Sonar. This is pretty rough for my teammates who play on xbox because then they cant hear the gamechat players not in our group. I can hear everyone all the time, but gamechat players cannot hear me. The sonar options that I use to chat with people in xbox party chat are the same as my game chat settings on infinite. Question. Every time my computer updates, steelseries engine backup device switch settings change. It's not a HUGE deal, but it's crazy annoying. Pro stream defaults and disables the arctis headphone option -- I have to manually move the pro stream option to the excluded device section at least once a week. The same thing happens after a steelseries engine update too. So many bugs with this app.

If I'm understanding the issue correctly, it sounds like it could be a Windows issue. It has a tendency to change the device IDs/names during certain updates which would in return cause issues if Sonar is performing strict device matching. Some applications give the opportunity to perform loose vs strict matching as a workaround to Windows's shenanigans and I thought Sonar had the same but I guess not.

scroll down to 'more sound settings down the bottom of the page you are showing. click the individual dives and disable. just remember what you are doing so you can reverse steps if something goes wrong.

Hi, I just downloaded SteelSeries GG, my friend and I were loving the Sonar sound enhancements until we realized the app was making our discord streams echo. We fixed this by going to the windows volume mixer and muting discord under our headphones, then muting it again under Sonar, but we noticed this fix makes it so we can't hear each other in clips with the Medal app. I know this might be a kind of niche issue but I was hoping someone might know a fix

In order for apps to output to the other devices in Sonar, you'll need to route the apps to the specified device. Routing can be done in one of two ways:

1. Use the routing drag and drop interface underneath the audio outputs to simply move any apps playing sounds to the required output

2. Open the Windows sound device by going to Settings > Sound > App Volume and Device Preferences. From this settings menu you can use the dropdown to route any app.

If you are having issues with routing not working or apps moving back to another device after dragging them, you may need to check the app itself for any sound output settings. Some apps like Discord, Spotify, and Apple Music may need to have their outputs changed within their app settings rather than done through Sonar.
