How did Sonar make it to release? This software is awful. Every boot I have to play with my inputs until I randomly find the one that works this time. I've gone from operating my system at 10-20% volume to having to have absolutely every volume control maxed to get any amount of sound. Love your hardware. This software is shite. yeah so that wasn't doing it but

for whatever reason the stream mix wasn't defaulting to the STREAM MIX audio option

i changed it and that fixed it

and then i could turn the headset option on the mic down and that finally worked lol

Hey there, not sure if there is anyone that knows a solution to my problem but I'll try and line it out concisely;

-Updated windows today, now Sonar is acting funny.
-Sonar mic wasn't working, so I switched my usb port that my mic was plugged into. Started working, but then my headset wouldn't pick up sound.
-Swapped the usb port that my headset was using. Headset started working again, mic stopped working.

So basically after I updated windows, it seems that sonar is only able to use either my microphone, or my headset, not both at the same time. This is particularly problematic for me as I need to use both my microphone and headset for the game I play.

I tried uninstalling the windows updates, apparently that didn't do anything because the updates didn't uninstall even though I went through the steps needed.

i have a question about volume notifications
i have sonar setup with my corsair void elite headset, and GG shows the volume level correctly (ex 10%) and when i press volume up or down on the headset it adjusts in sonar, but windows shows a notification that the volume level is 100% anytime i use the volume adjust buttons on the headset. the volume in windows settings (windows 11 btw) also shows the level at 100%. so the only place i'm seeing an accurate volume level is in GG/sonar.
is there a way to either have windows correctly see the volume level and when it does notifications display the correct level, or to disable windows volume notifications and have GG/sonar display its own notification with the correct level?

I need to rant about this or I'm gonna explode. It has been MONTHS (I purchased my headset in November) that I have been begging for a solution to Sonar overriding my default audios.
MONTHS where if they could just implement USER CONTROL into their HARDWARE ENABLED software, there would be no issues.
Somehow, almost two years after Sonar's initial release, it still maintains being the absolute worst audio routing software available, yet ironically DEMANDS to be the sole proprietor of your Windows Default Audio.

I bought the Arctis Nova Pro headset for $350 in November, because I am deaf and struggle to hear footsteps in-game. It's an excellent piece of hardware in other ways (infinite battery, wireless latency are solid) but my primary usecase was for FPS gaming. Upon installing Sonar and clicking the spatial audio feature, I found Spatial audio to work extremely well for me. I could tweak the footstep distances and EQ and actually hear things the way my friends often do with more normal hearing.

The problem? Very simple. Sonar always sets itself as the primary audio device and refuses to allow anything else to be default.
Additionally, you cannot disable Sonar virtual audio channels. Only use gaming EQ, not voice chat? Sorry, not possible.
This is obnoxious for sorting through audio devices in games and software, but also demands quite a bit of unnecessary compute power simply running the virtual audio mirrors (when they are not being used).

Sonar is convinced that anyone who uses SteelSeries products are too daft to possibly have their own audio routing setup, and instead of letting you choose how you want the software to work, they force it to be a complete package with zero customisation.

I use Wave Link for my virtual audio routing. Wave Link allows me to both create and REMOVE virtual audio channels, add vst plugins, and has significantly less cpu overhead on my system for double the audio sampling rate.

All I want in the world is for Sonar to allow me to create a Gaming mix, feed my Gaming output into it, and receive the spatial audio that i paid $350 to unlock.

If you install any other audio software in existence (Wave Link, VoiceMeeter, Virtual Audio Cable, ASIO Link Driver) they all allow you to remove channels you don't need, and NONE OF THEM FORCE THEMSELVES TO BE THE DEFAULT AUDIO DEVICE.

I will continue to complain about this until, one day, probably well over a year from now, I will be able to route my audio the way that works for me:

But until Sonar gets the bare minimum user control, I cannot use advertised features of my headset without Sonar taking over my audio routing in completely unacceptable ways.
The worst part is that when I first got the headset, sonar was a much "dumber" version and at the time only had I think two audio channels, neither of which were default

such is why, you create the default user experience you hope to solve for as many people as possible, but you also create as many options as possible to serve those who want a custom experience

this is well studied in game design and i'm sure the principle is at least partially shared in app development

when something is as easy as a boolean (the line of code that sets defaults can simply do a single variable check) ultimately there is not any excuse for the developer, they just failed to create an accessible product

or even worse, if the leadership demands less configuration, then they ultimately have no understanding of PC/Gaming audience as a whole which is even more troubling

i imagine its just the app development team has not been told to prioritise customisation, but it's still an objective truth that more user control is better

for instance, if you had user control parity with wave link (and feature parity too, but you guys are close) why would i ever use wave link? most people who compare the softwares will never report back to you with their reasoning why they chose the competitor

but it is commonly down to which program is more or less flexible- yours being the least flexible out of any given audio routing option at the moment

Game is the default output for all your Windows sounds. If you want a specific program to use a different output, like running your browser or Spotify through Media, you need to manually select that output for that program in Windows settings

honestly seems like the best advice I can give to anyone is to not set up Sonar. that's a lot of sources of ppls issues. us normal Plebians only need 1 Audio Device, we really don't need to use Sonar, but the Equalizer Settings weren't very apparent to me until after I setup Sonar and realized I could've just changed the Equalizer Setting itself for the headset which was all I wanted cause when I bought my headset it sounded like I was in a Hall

guess the best choice currently for headsets is... hyperx, any that is 7.1 BESIDES REVOLVER

corsair and JBL have terrible support, corsair have 0 zero support while JBL refuses to fix softwares, Quantum ONE is their premium headset and is 1 year without fix, razer have buggy and limited software and support, besides salty price, i heard turtle beach does not have a good enough support and price is at limit from being considered salty, so i can just say it's high for what delivers

currently hyperx is the most benefiting brand to choose, some headsets like cloud alpha, ii etc. have 2 years warranty, on feedbacks the surround/7.1 is kinda dry

but the bestest spatial audio is from JBL headsets cause feels natural, easily separate instruments without make em look too much virtual, second place is sonar that is kinda dry but from my tests have one of the biggest immersions

i guess that increasing middles and middle bass would make hyperx surround less dry, i use an USB DAC cause those USB headsets commonly come with not a good quality sound (unless pretty expensive), and have a separate DAC and get a p2 headset will make you have supreme control and quality

if you don't care to sound quality and support and want risk get a buggy software with it being never solved, get an damn JBL and have fun

their headsets commonly have warm profiles, not muddy but not neutral, in EQ u can make it sharpy for competitive games tho

NOTE: in order to use brand's surround, you need get the headset with USB sound board

Ok, it's now official, Sonar is the reason I won't have another Steelseries product. Reformatted my computer... TWICE to try to solve that issue and it still crashes randomly. Why on earth do I need that software when my older Arctis didn't? If I'm in game and the software crashes, I lose ALL sound and even worse, I need to shut down the game and restart it as it won't go back "through" the software after restarting it.
I've gone through support and it didn't help in the end.

Short answer NO, you do not need to use it and I prefer not to. While spatial audio is interesting its kind of a gimmick, video games already have built in "3D" audio for normal Left and Right that change based on your position in a game to allow you to learn what behind you or in front of you sounds like.

You could use it for specific applications like Spotify or apple music in order to have different volumes levels similar to the windows mixer, for instance I have my spotify playing on my "aux" and then binded keys on my number pad to raise and lower the volume so I can quickly change the volume of just my music while playing a game. You could also connect to other speakers instead of your headset.

I have a question. I have a wireless SteelSeries headset, and a set of 2.1 speakers. I understand that I can plug the speakers into the headset's dongle so the speakers will work only while the headst is off. However, there are times I want the headset to be on, and sound to play through speakers. (Generally, if I want to use the mic while playing audio for other people that are here IRL)

For me, the best solution so far is to set Sonar to use my Headset for 'Game' and my speakers for 'Media', and then use Windows settings to switch my default audio from Game to Media and back whenever needed. Is there a better way to quickly change which audio device is being used? For example, is there a hotkey I could use to change Sonar's 'Aux' from one device to another? That way I could have Windows send any sounds that could play from either to the 'Aux' and use Sonar to switch which actual device I use. (And gain the benefits of Sonar's EQ features!)

yep i'd definitely recommend submitting tickets to #official-support. the update for GG 43 did fix the issue for me that they outlined in the patch notes but it looks like on certain setups it's acting up, so the more information they have the faster it can hopefully be fixed (or hopefully support says "we already know! should be fixed ASAP")

for those coming in later I can summarize a bit so y'all know what's up:

Device Fallback is a feature in Sonar for wireless Nova headsets only (Nova 7 and Nova Pro Wireless) What it's supposed to do is that when Sonar detects that your headset has turned off, it'll automatically switch the outputs in Sonar to another device, such as speakers. It should also switch back when the headset turns back on. (This feature isn't related to the line-out on the base station for the Nova Pro, btw. That's a separate feature, and if you're using the line-out on the base station, then you should keep device fallback turned off in the software so the hardware can handle the switching)

There was a (imho, very annoying) bug in GG 42 and older versions where device fallback wouldn't check your headset's state when Sonar first booted, so you'd turn your PC on and the headset would be the main device in Sonar despite it being off. GG 43 should have fixed that, but based on the conversation above there's a few people where this fix may have broken something else.

Some steps to take:

• Redownload GG from https://steelseries.com/gg and run the installer again. You don't need to uninstall, just try re-running the updater.
• Unplug/Replug headset
• Make sure Window's USB Suspend isn't messing with the device

If all the above fails then definitely open a ticket with #official-support

problem is that the solution in v43 does affect DAC passthrough when the virtual channel inputs are getting changed... in my case it gets changed to my oculus headset by default and passthrough doesn't function at all through my DAC line-out speakers.. i have to manually change them back to the headset for all of the channels which gets changed again on restart. Also turning on my headset doesn't fix the issue because i already have device fallback disabled under the settings menu.

Pulling my hair out as of late. I am glad I'm on break from creating content as this is crazy. I exclusively use my headset, sonar is my default devices and everything is setup via sonar. I don't have any fallback options enabled as I use the headset exclusively. For whatever reason my sonar settings keeps reverting to realtech or nvidia broadcast and off of my headset and i have to set it multiple times a day. I really can't keep doing this, but it seems pointless to have the arctis nova pro wireless headset with out the software. anybody else experiencing this?

Me neither man i got a somewhat fix, I just disabled real tech and the other shit for audio and then set in sound mixer options on Steelseries to my nova pros and external mic and it seems to change sometimes but no where near as often, also I noticed when changing drivers for anything else the issue happens

Same here. After the latest update that claims to fix issues with fallback and nova wireless headsets, it now changes the device to other audio devices for no reason. It is driving me completely insane. I am trying to disable other audio devices in windows settings to see if that fixes it.

Here is an frequency response of an arctis 7 (VANILLA, not an NOVA!!!)

Less sub bass, higher attacking/agressive bass frequency, more high-middles and sharpy trebles resulting in cristaline crucnhy details

While an nova 7 (that obviously compete with vanilla arctis 7) have a more neutral frequency response besides a lil of both sub bass and bass, and lower low-trebles (there commonly is located the sharpy voices like s, z etc.

Lower low treble guarantee less annoying zzz and sss sounds from voices

Here is an frequency response from sennheiser hd560s, an audiophile German headphone

Bout bass, you can tell nova made it well, sub bass higher means higher immersion, the low and mid treble reduction is widely affected both in hd560s and nova 7, making sure voices will sound less sharpy and natural, while on arctis 7 vanilla it have reduction more specifically on extreme sharpy zzz and sss and minor treble details are highlighted

Arctis 7 and nova 7 are similar, but some say nova 7 is muddy/muffled or natural sounding cause they choose a better fidelity strategy

If you have the fallback option turned off in settings, before the last update Sonar would just leave the target device alone (specifically my NPW) so if I wanted to switch outputs I would manually go in and switch it for game or whatever. That's the way I wanted it because I didn't want it swtiching outputs. I wanted it to stay on my headset regardless if the headset was connected or not.

The last update seems to have broken that so now it switches regardless of having device fallback enabled or disabled. Yet if fallback is disabled and my headset is disconnected, Sonar will auto-switch the outputs then, but won't switch them back once the headset is reconnected. You have to enable device fallback for that. But I only want it switching the audio outs to the headset since I have a standalone mic setup. So I finally just had to disable the NPW mic in Windows so that the only audio in device is my stand alone mic so it can't switch to anything else

Idk why they went messing with the fallback stuff since it worked fine before but now it doesn't really work the way anyone actually wants it to

Mods don't work for SteelSeries, it's just something I noticed from using Sonar on a daily basis. I would hope they're aware of the issue but we don't have any direct contact with the Sonar team. I find out my Eq settings would make some cracking noises once in a while for my iem. Sonar cannot set preamp and I think it could be the problem so I switched to use EqualizerAPO for trial. sonar is designed to work with Gaming as the main input, since when you have a game open it can sometimes cause issues to tab out/close out of the game to switch the output in windows

so as long as something other than Gaming is the main output in Windows, Sonar will throw an error

I tried with Arctic Nova Pro with GameDac2. 145€ in Amazon Warehouse l'ike knew' was a bargain, whell it arrived no reacoditiones, instead it was but full sealed. I don't know what did the first buyer but seems he gave off even before trying the set. Now the problems....amplifier is two weak, DAC is a low power ESS 9028Q2M but aniway soud was too loew (i selected i don't live in UE to avoid even less gain). THere are many possibilitied to supply morre curren, USB 3.2 Gen 2 or directclly a usb cable to an AC/DC adaptar. And i ust tried with the included heaphones, a HyperX Cloud Alpha, Beyerdynamics DT 770 Pro + DT 900 X pro. The secon ones with 250 Mhz was obvioly a no go. But what about includes headphone, well, it seems that wireless ANC version ocuppied SS entire time because the isolation of regular ones was almost 0. Neutral sound is you can clearly hear mid high and high freq. sibilants. Another thing to note is mids a highs are piercing, you have to be careful when dealing with settings. Then there's Sonar software, EQ is a dream. I switched to a SB AE-7 but i'm still tinkering with Sonar. I talk people abouit it and: "bloatware! the spy too! don't want moments? you need and account?". IThat people using iCue just for lighting crappy propietary Corsair RGB case, NZXT for LCS, Logitech center for the mouse, and Razer Synapse for the Heaphones. LOL.

Lates Prime tseries with optical switches was a letdown. They should get their best mice from the past (including sensei ten), remove all innecesary plastic wich only adds innecesary weights, and start cherry picking main switches to reduce tipical tolerance of 15G of main switches to only 5G (check Vauxee, Engdear, and others). .Optical switches in mice is a hit or miss, same model, they can be a crap or you get a satisfying click and feedback . Anyway, the Sensei Ten is not rare to see on CS scene (ther no such ting as the mouse that leet use in competitive FPS, ad no it's not the LPX LS).

yep it's a feature they added in v43 that causes it to choose a random device when it doesn't detect the headset being on...i recommend submitting a ticket and reporting it to get it on their radar

It appears to be a bug with the latest Sonar update that makes the target devices switch when the headset is off regardless of the device fallback setting. The only way to make Sonar retarget your headset when you turn it back on is to enable device fallback. Otherwise you'll have to manually switch devices each time you turn the headset on

Let me start off with some simple questions:

   1a) If anybody uses spatial sound, what's your preference in performance vs immersion?
   1b) What distance are you using?
2. Suggestions for good presets to use? and do you change them depending on what kind of gaming you are going to be doing?

Well, thanks to the video, I think I managed to route my things like Discord to Chat and web browser to media, so that it isn't all using gaming. That's nice.

I guess I'm trying to figure out what it is I'm actually looking for in terms of the sound I have the ability to customise (and I'm not expecting you to know, since I don't even know, lol)
Just know that the G930 is such a feature-less, 10 year old 7.1 virtual surround sound that just.. sounded good out of the box, to me. I've read reviews where people say this and that about sound of the Arctis Nova Pro, and I'm just like.. one giant question mark. I don't know "really great sound", but I can probably hear pretty poor sound. Like, my bass player when we're out, he knows exactly what to listen for and which frequencies to dampen or boost - I dunno how he does it, but he does, and the software he's using is similar to Sonar. So it looks familiar at least.

Music is sounding a bit thin in this headset, but maybe I need to try out the presets with the app now actually being routed to the correct preference tab, media.

In terms of the gaming presets, there aren't actually any games of those that I play. Does that mean I should go for some of the movie ones instead?
I somehow wish there was a feature where you could download other presets other people made for games that don't necessarily come with the app.

In terms of spatial sound for gaming, I understand the difference between performance and immersion, but do people really set up their sound for, say, CS:GO, and then proceed to re-customise their sound before playing Elden Ring later? Or are people more or less "I play this, so I'd like my general sound tuned towards..."
I do not understand headphone mode vs. speaker mode - or is it literally as simple as it sounds? that because I have an Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, I should go with headphone mode?
I don't know about the distance setting, as I have never been faced with a choice of how close nor far away I want surround to be. In my G930 it was on or off and I could boost or dampen certain virtualised angles if I wanted to, but of course I never wanted to.

Ok, after using sonar for sometime now. Almost a year. I think I have a pretty good grasp on it. Sonar is a pretty good idea, but that is as far as it gets, an Idea. Why is default set to gaming? Why doesn't the PC's main volume not follow sonars profile? To control the volume the sonar panel must be open at all times.
I believe this is the biggest downfall of sonar. When playing games you have to windows key out of the game to change the volume in what ever profile you are using. This is just not realistic in a FPS game all the time. Sonar needs a lot of work in the volume control area. PLUS I want to control what is set as default. I don't want gaming set as my default. Yet the program is designed to do just this with no way to change it. This and the volume is 2 things I see brought up the most it seems by different users.
Address the volume problem and default settings need to be addressed in order for Sonar to be useful.
Do this and I will try to use it once again.Thank you.

I don't know if this is a fluke and will go away, or if it's finally fixed -- but my Logitech G560 (USB) speakers didn't get unselected and moved to the headset when my screensaver went on -- so I was able to come back to my computer and still listen through the last device I was listening to upon return.

If this was a bug fix, THANK YOU SO MUCH! This has been driving me absolutely nuts and making me regret spending over $300 on the Nova Pro Wireless.

If it was a fluke, well, I'll just go back to being sad, I guess, ha.
