Quick question. I know that you should leave the engine EQ flat if you intend to use sonar EQ but is this reversible? As in, if I want to use sonar for the mic and engine for the headphones, can I then leave sonar flat and adust engine settings? (Arctis Nova 7)

if you have an Engine EQ active this will apply to any playback sound but not on the mic. However, why would you do that if with Sonar you have a much powerful EQ with a lot of additional effects?

I have a sneaking suspicion sonar caused an issue with my PC recognizing my headset. The available audio devices appeared and disappeared continuously rendering nothing selectable as an output source. I removed the steelseries application and the issue went away. I also think this could have caused my audio drivers to crash completely. Restarting PC did temporarily fix the issue, but it came back quickly. Windows 10 (Work PC) , using Astro a50's because I'm not taking my wireless pros out of the house lol

I've had this issue with my home PC and the wireless pro's as well when sonar came out. Had to uninstall the app and reinstall to get my headset to show up as a selectable source again.

Is this a known issue with sonar, something else entirely, or does anyone else have similar issues?

Neither one is a full replacement for the other. Nahimic works great if it comes with your laptop! But if your device didn't come with Nahimic, then Sonar is there for similar needs. Both are awesome, and shouldn't interfere with each other in normal operation.

Since everyone has a different voice, there really isn't any one EQ that's good for everyone.. It's why they allow recording your voice then messing with the controls til you get a sound you like 🙂

I don't see anything wrong? You shouldn't be able to select Sonar outputs from within Sonar, otherwise the VADs would be outputting to itself which doesn't really make sense

unfortunately the way Sonar is designed is to be all or nothing, so as long as it's on it'll be the main audio device. if there's issues with device priority then you'll need to either set it in sonar on boot or just turn sonar off

I'm on an Xbox and I personally haven't figured out how to transfer the settings over. I have to manually enter my equalizer settings on the Base station which is fine.

I've been having this issue lately with my Arctis Nova 7P and Steelseries Sonar where while in the virtual game audio output, which I've been using for a while with no issues, the windows volume controls don't affect the master volume at all. It can only be changed using the physical volume slider on the headset as well as manually from within Sonar. But I was definitely able to adjust the master volume of the virtual output using the volume keys just recently... Did something change in an update? So all my gear is Steel Series. Keyboard, Mouse, Mouse pad, Headset. I absolutely love the brand and gear but Sonar has been a nightmare. I for the life of me can't seem to get it to function properly. Randomly my gamesounds become way higher then anything else or the opposite happens. So I just gave up on sonar completely but I did like Chatmix so I tried to keep going. I recently bought a El Gato Mic to sound a little bit higher quality and once you swap the Nova Mic for the El Gato chat mix is gone completely and I don't understand why because I'm still using the headset the same way as always just not using Nova's mic. Can someone help me with Sonar? I started using it about 4-5 days ago (by the way that was hella good!) and today it doesn't work. First of all it crashed my system (Windows 10) while playing Valheim and right after restarting, it doesn't work anymore. When I disable the Sonar, sounds coming back but Virtual Audio Devices doesn't work anymore. I checked my drivers, updates and my Application Sound Preferences - Currently using VAD Media on my Browser, VAD Game for Games etc.- but it didn't solved the problem.

I just reinstalled SteelSeries GG then set the Sonar from scratch and same thing happened. Firstly Black screen and unresponding, secondly crash then -After restart- lastly lose of sounds. I think Virtual Audio Devices is overlapping and causing a crash. There is 3 possible scenarios;
1- Choosing the Media and Game output devices as the same while Sonar set-up section might be the reason to overlapping.
2- Setting multiple games to one single Virtual Audio Device from Windows might be the reason to overlapping.
3- Its happening while trying to open an application (Valheim) so there is a high possibility that the application has problem or certain applications trigger overlapping.

I have SteelSeries Arctis 5 Wired USB headset. I have Sonar running fine in game chat (Destiny 2) and Discord crosschat. When I turn on my wireless Audeze Penrose headset and switch the Windows audio to use the Audeze instead of SteelSeries Sonar Gaming I cannot hear anyone and I am not sure if they can hear me (nobody says anything). It seems like it can only be attributed to applications as a whole, so you would have to set the output of the browser you use to access youtube to the media tab of sonar.

Sonar is not preventing any device detection. Check if it's popping up in your devices in Windows. You could try to restart your hardware. There are multiple options: have you managed to set up your Audeze Penrose headset with Sonar ? (selecting your device in the mixer tab) You can test out your mic in app. (Microphone tab > look at the screenshot)

If it's too much of a hassle you can simply turn off Sonar completely Settings > General. Although we would much appreciate if you stayed with us

If your base station is connected and working, you only need to turn on your headset with the button on the headset itself.

It's more like a Windows thing touching on hardware and Sonar.
So what happens when your dongle is connected to your PC, Windows detects it, if your headset is on, sound comes through, everyone is happy.
But when you turn off your headset and the dongle is still plugged, Windows still sends the signal that your headset is up and running....
And Sonar can get confused... Best practice if you see some weird reaction from Sonar > Unplug - replug, turn it on / off and it should solve the problem.

Make sure your output device is selected on which channel you're configuring, if configuring anything but the game channel, ensure the program you're doing the EQ for is routed to that channel.

IE if making a custom EQ or changing EQ on the media channel for say Spotify, make sure Spotify is set to use the SteelSeries Sonar - Media channel.

I've noticed that every time I restart my computer it seems like my windows sound settings for the microphone input resets. Is there any way to make that not happen? It messes up my usual setup of having Windows feed my microphone channel back to me and it always takes a while to set things back to how I like it.

the main problem is when taking clips with nvidia shadowplay. While Sonar is active it only records the game audio and no discord and spotify music. When I disable the sonar Media & Chat sound devices it works but as I said it resets itself again the next time I restart my pc :/

Is there a pair of global hotkeys available to adjust Game/Chat Mix? I have an Elgato Stream Deck and I'd like to map buttons for ChatMix control. I can map volume controls for each virtual device separately, and that's what I'm setting up for now, but configuring the ChatMix slider would be better. Just curious, GG with Sonar is the only Software changes made to my PC in the last 2 weeks. No new hardware was installed also. Starting playing Destiny 2 and all of the sudden, I get kicked out of the game with a Battleye error PLUM.

I'm experiencing frequent Tropico 6 crashes when Sonar is running, but when it is disabled there are no problems.

I'm not sure of what all will trigger the crashes, but I know for certain when Sonar is running and I get a notification through the Windows notification system that Tropico will crash. When Sonar is disabled it has never crashed even with many notifications going through.

inside each game you can set the output to one of sonar outputs (game,chat,media,aux) or to the same one.
i have a setup like this:
dota/EFT/CoD output to sonar game
discord/whatsapp output to chat
etc...
so when you switch the game it will automatically output to sonar and then you can control it differently

even if you use OBS or any other streaming/recording application you can choose those outputs as inputs for that application and then control what do you want to stream/record.

think of these outputs on sonar as actual devices with plugs on them and your games are some audio player. now every audio player is attached to that Sonar-game device. and everytime it plays the output will be on that device. If you play 2 games at the exact same time (god help your PC) and you want to control your audio to mute one or lower the other. then you cant forward them all to one Sonar-game channel. that's when you can use the other channels chat/aux/media

Let's for example get Valorant and Minecraft. They have entirely different configurations, that are both inside "Game mode", and since there is only 1 mode for all games, if I switch between games, I have to set different configurations manually. That's the issue

So i just rechieved a pair of IEM that i want to use for a specific game. When i choose to use them as my media and game in sonar it wont work. The reason i am still using sonar is that the IEM does not have a mic so i want to still use my steelseries headphones for the mic. If i turn off the headset (steelseries) i can use my IEM but the second i turn on my headphones all sound dissapear from IEM and its not even in the headphones. Hello people, anyone else having heavy C drive usage by sonar? its an m.2 970 evo with fairly decent benchmarks (seq read 3389MB/s & seq write 2325 MB/s ) but sonar is just constantly reading and writing untill i close the Disk using task, and then it doesnt do it anymore. i dont have moments turned on since i record with OBS on another drive. i havent found whats causing it or what is starting it up. when i close the disk using program it does not affect my audio in or output. Anyone else having similair issues? im playing Escape from Tarkov alot and its just killing my loading times because the disk is used by sonar..... its continuously writing on the SSD at 4 MB/sec making it slower and upping disk usage to 50%. turning sonar off and on in general fixes it. funny thing is, the task is not summarized under the Steelseries GG Client - its a task on its own so if i want to find it to close it manually in task manager i have to scroll down all the way in my background processes.

Hi everyone, just got my Arctis 5, I have significant hearing loss in my left ear due to cholesteatoma / operations, to the point if I put my hands over both ears and just over my left ear it sounds the same. I've always struggled with surround sounds and games where you hyper focus on directional sound like siege I could never be good at bc I couldn't tell where the footsteps were coming from lol. Does anyone have any suggestions for setting or things I could do to enjoy my headset more and even to be able to discern directional sound, or just the best general settings you recommend for someone with a gammy left ear. Hey all, I’m having a consistent issue with Sonar. I can start the GG software no problem but Sonar just gets stuck in a loop forever and never actually starts up. I updated my bios a while back and that fixed the issue for a week or two but the problem is back and no matter how many times I restart GG or my PC it just refuses to load at all anymore and I’m not really sure what else to try, any advice would be appreciated.

I can't tell if this is an issue with sonar on windows but some games seem to have 3D audio disabled in their in-game options if you dont use a spatial audio solutions that the device properties or windows settings recognize (like windows sonic, dolby atoms, dts etc). If spatial audio is enabled in Sonar, the game I am playing thinks that 3D audio is disabled. Am I somehow still getting the benefits of spatial audio? I assume not

I had the same problem, but I think is a misunderstanding about how that Fallback setting is working. In fact that's only in case you want to switch the output if you power off the head set. If you want to redirect the sound to out-put line of your headphones DAC then you don't need that you just power on the headphones go in sonar and set the playback device to her the sound in headphones and just switch off the fallback settings because you don't want to use other sound output device, the DAC will handle it, and if is not finding the headphones will output the sound on line out in DAC . I did not check but I think, if you connect the speakers directly to an audio jack of your computer then you need the fallback settings to switch the output from DAC to on whatever device are you using for that jack port in your pc

The source has to be outputting in a surround mix to get any surround effect in your headset. If you're just listening to a stereo output in surround it'll just make the audio seem very tinny, distant, and echoey

I guess it varies game by game but I see some games have 3D audio toggles that are independent of the speaker type and I feel like I am just getting more confused by the minute

If you're trying to use the Spatial Audio feature in Sonar then yeah you need to select whatever surround mix is available in the game you're playing.

So if a game has an independent 3D audio toggle separate from the speaker type, generally you'd want to turn on 3D audio in the game and set the speaker type to headphone, then turn on the Spatial Audio option in Sonar and customize it from there

If the game has a single option for output type, select 5.1 or 7.1 surround (whichever one is available). Some games only have 5.1 mixes but most of the time they'll have an option for 7.1 as well, or they'll be combined and the game itself will figure out which mix to use based on how many speakers Windows registered are connected to the PC.

For the Sonar Game output, Windows detects the number of speakers as 8 (even though they're virtual), so the game will know to output in a 7.1 channel configuration because it knows you have all the individual (virtual) speakers to support it

when this happens to me I unplug the base station wait a few moments and plug it back in, then wait ~60 seconds and it works properly again. My theory is that your USB ports aren't powering off when your PC is shut-down and the base station doesn't reset properly unpon the next boot. I think a solution is to change your bios to not power the USB ports when the PC is off. meanwhile, I just do the unplug/re-plug to remedy it since I use the usb power to charge peripherals overnight.

Meanwhile, has anyone experienced this issue with the volume sliders. It seems the 'Chat' and 'Master' are invariably linked at the hip, and tabbing away and back shows the net effect. I can't figure out how to stop this from happening.

Yea that's my problem, when I turn off the headphones, Sonar does revert back to the correct audio driver for my speakers but it still won't play any sound. I've kinda got it working by just plugging the speakers into my computer instead of the unit that comes with the headphones but I do have to manually switch between them in the audio settings now (and that's not really ideal).

just FYI there's two different fallbacks: the one Sonar controls via software, and one the base station controls via hardware. if you're using the hardware (i.e speakers are wired into the base station) you need to turn off the software fallback

Okay... slowly im getting tired of this buggy mess of a software.
I can get used to restart Sonar with EVERY new boot, because if not, its stuck in the endless load bs and simply doesnt work.
And now - suddenly - booted my PC, i changed nothing, i couldnt select any audio output (that still gets shown in the available options) on three out of four output lines. For whatever arbitrary reason Chat and Mic did still work. And the only solution was to reinstall the software - so should i now keep the installer ready for a weekly reinstall too, besides the daily restarting?
I mean... could you please fix the current software and make it standalone (hopefully making it easier to keep it smooth) without the unnecessary registration, before implementing useless features like the AUX output? Or at least roll out features completely that are already there... like by god please implement parametric EQ on ALL lines - you are advertising the software with that feature on your website, while 2 out of 4 relevant lines DONT have parametric EQ (including the microphones, which could use that by far the most).
Or fix the noisefloor of the "Mic Test" feature, that is completely disproportionaly louder to the real noisefloor of all mics i used with it until this point. Dont know if that is artificially added to make the Smart Denoise stuff sound "useful", but it doesnt help if you actually want to know how you realy sound.
Like where are the priorities here? Where is the QA?
Sorry for the rant and sorry if i sound "disrespectful" or anything, but especially the infinite loading bug doesnt seem to be that rare and "new" that you could simply ignore it. SS Sonar is a software that caters to a lot of newbs that e.g. want to create content or stream, that dont want to use Voicemeeter. And at least the base-features like "working at all" should simply work for them without regular troubleshooting.
I still wish you all a nice and bug-free day! But please improve on that...

The dots can be moved - they "represent" nothing.
And besides that, its a little bit more complicated. In the best case you can have the game with sound in the background open and do the EQ while listening to how it changes things. Some games are obviously better suited for this, than others. xD
But besides competitive games, no game needs EQ imo.
