Been kind of wondering about this for a while. I know it's stated stands can only hurt other stands but there's two examples I can think of that imply hamon can maybe affect stands. ||Intially when Joseph tried to use hamon to get rid of Empress, she stated the only reason it didn't work was caused she was fused with Joseph, that it'd be like using hamon on himself. When he successfully rips her off with Hermit Purple, he did channel hamon through the vines. Then there was Dio who sensed Joseph had hamon flowing via Joseph having Hermit Purple wrapped around him. Considering he had to resort to the Stop Time knife trick to attack and hurt Joseph.|| Yet at the same time, I feel like they don't exactly prove it at all.

hamon can flow through stands, which is why dio refused to attack hamon-covered joseph with the world because he'd be touching the hamon.
joseph tried hitting empress with hamon too and it flowed through her but the reason why it didn't work is because empress is made out of joseph's own body, and joseph's body is of course immune to his own hamon and can't get hurt by it
when he killed empress, he used hermit purple's vines to wrap around her solidified body and used the environment to rip her apart with the force

stands can be affected and damaged by other things, when a stand wants to interact with the outside world they have to enter a form that allows them to interact with objects
so if star platinum decides to punch a sharp spike with the intention of hitting it, he'd get his hand stabbed because he intentionally wanted to interact with the spike
but if star platinum decided to phase through the spike, it could do that too without injury, only when he wants to physically touch objects that the object can touch him
like how stands can grab bullets instead of the bullet just phasing through their ghostly body and hitting the user, they can choose to interact with objects if they want to

Ah, I honestly didn't think of that. If nothing physical could make contact with stands, there's no way Star Platinum could do things like punching the truck to prevent a head on collision in the Wheel of Fortune fight.

in the wheel of fortune fight, hierophant tries to hold up the car, but joseph tells kakyoin that his stand isn't strong enough and it'd be ripped to shreds if he tried. which is why kakyoin used the winch instead.
this shows that regular objects can harm stands to a limited degree, if hierophant ties himself to two cars and he has to hold the entire weight of one of them, he'll take damage from the force
